Cambridge Crossing (NorthPoint) | East Cambridge/Charlestown | Cambridge/Boston

Re: NorthPoint Cambridge (The one that was train yards, the big plan.)

Regardless, more groceries is never bad. I'm cheering for one in the Crate and Barrel space on Mass. Ave. too.

My new apartment is around the corner from there. I hadn't given much thought to what might go there, but it is a bit of a grocery dead zone by Cambridge standards. Nearest store in any direction from there is about 1/2 mile.

Re: NorthPoint Cambridge (The one that was train yards, the big plan.)

I seem to remember the Rite Aid location in Davis was pitched to TJs, but they rejected it because of the lack of parking. I think the Crate & Barrel location is even worse in that regard, so I wouldn't hold out too much hope for a grocer.

The Whole Foods at Prospect and Harvard has no more parking than that site, and they seem to do pretty well. TJ's locations don't seem to go overboard in that regard, and the building could be retrofit to accommodate more spaces on an upper level.

Honestly, I'm expecting a conversion to office space, which will just be a damn waste.

Re: NorthPoint Cambridge (The one that was train yards, the big plan.)

IIRC, the Newton Wegman's is 70,000sf, and it feels pretty big, though it was by far the smallest location that chain had opened. I'm not the best judge of size, but 50,000 seems a little oddly placed between conventional and boutique groceries. Maybe a Sudbury Farms?

Regardless, more groceries is never bad. I'm cheering for one in the Crate and Barrel space on Mass. Ave. too.

50-60k sf was (is) the standard size for the Super Stop & Shops and (Super) Shaws that became the norm in the 90's - 2000's.

The old ones they replaced were typically closer to half that size. The Stop & Shop I grew up with was pretty much the size of Whole Foods (it's a OS Job Lot now), probably why the transition of Johnnie's to WF's was so easy. Johnnie's never got on the huge supermarket kick. Thankfully.

Re: NorthPoint Cambridge (The one that was train yards, the big plan.)

I love my much-maligned mini-Star at Tappan Street. Couldnt be more than 20k sqft if that. (It may be far less.) Yes, there is less of each product on the shelf, but I don't need to trek back a half mile if I've forgotten dish soap when I reach the cashier. Who wants to go to a huge supermarket anyway?

Re: NorthPoint Cambridge (The one that was train yards, the big plan.)

For those interested, HYM is making good on their promise to grind much of the large detritus and spread it as faux roads for staging in Northpoint. They've also used some of the largest chunks to line the roads, showing where at least three of the parks will be, the east condo complex, and part of the (southeast) border of North ST and an unnamed street. Looks better than it did!

In other news, the west facing facade of Twenty|20 has much of the protective covering from its cladding removed. Also, much of the utility work on the building's west side is again buried - this time with storm drains visible. I did note that the entrance to the parking garage (confirmed by HYM to be between the Gilmore Bridge and the building is tight!

Since an image is worth much, perhaps Tango or another local resident will upload a few images (my links rarely work: apologies).

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the town meeting last night and do not know the outcomes of the votes.

21 Water Street, the old MBTA tire facility is finally being demolished.

The site is supposed to be used for staging and equipment for GLX construction. Eventually this spot will be the bus terminal portion of the new station.

21 Water street (MBTA tire facility) almost entirely demolished.

Ohhhh boy, is that glazing on 22 water Street? I'm not liking the looks of that at all.

Re: NorthPoint Cambridge (The one that was train yards, the big plan.)

Update:

- Much more large rubble was ground this week and distributed on the "roads".

- T|20 "road" fire hydrants were installed.

- Of the two construction tracks climbing the building's west side, one was completely removed by this morning (29 Aug) and the other was prepped for removal.

For the Water ST section:

- More glass at 22 W ST, with most of the building bagged.

- 21 W ST demolition essentially complete, with the rubble moved offsite (since they cannot use the nearby detritus pile since that's owned by HYM/Northpoint).

Happy Labor Day weekend, all!

Looking forward to seeing these road layouts. From what's on the NorthPoint site vs current state:

I am trying to post via image shack. What step am I missing in order to post the photo and not the link?
Small syntax change: to show us the picture, you want:

httpYourPhotoURL.jpg (replace angle brackets with square ones)

To show and link, you need:
<URL=httpYourPhotoURL.jpg>httpYourPhotoURL.jpg

Arlington-thanks for the help. I will be posting more photos. This side of Twenty/20 appears to be almost complete. I also like the look. A lot of work remains to be done on other parts of the building.

Tango, if you view your photo on ImageShack you'll see a grey "Get Links/Image Sizes" button on the right. Click that and then choose "Forum" and a size from the dropdowns. Once there you can cut/paste into this forum.
