Re: Berklee Expansion Plans

I tentatively like it.

On this scale and in this area the 'industrial chic' look fits well. I can't help but imagine that the facade material would look awful though on a skyscraper. For this project I like it. Is there any way we can tear down (or do an extensive facedectomy) to that concrete hulk across from the CSC?

Re: Berklee Expansion Plans

Folks shouldn't turtle up. Just wade in and duke it out. More fun that way!

It's honestly not worth it most times. I can only speak for myself. I did not go to school to become an architect. I do not know the names of styles of architecture, or periods buildings come from. I just know what I like. I have been a member for 7 years, and know from experience, if I chime in on something I like, I will have a half dozen "experts" telling me how wrong I am. So, for the most part, I just look for photo updates. I love to see cores, steel, cranes, cladding all going up and progressing. There are a few who post pics all the time. That is the best part of this site.

There are some technical experts, but when it comes to aesthetics, you know the old saying: "Opinions are like assholes; everyone has one". Maybe some are more prone to diarrhea than others?

^And remember, everything said here is anonymous. If one had to sign one's name I suspect the discourse here would be very different. Anonymity provides cowards false courage.

Ignore them.

It also allows anyone to call someone else a coward even when they are putting their own opinions out there for the sake of discussion. The internet is a mess in this way. We all just do the best we can I guess.

Not quite. There are a number of people here whose identities are out in the open, mine included, and there's a Facebook page for aB where those of us on it have gotten to know each other's true names.

Re: Berklee Expansion Plans

I sit corrected. I didn't realize some of us are not anon. Still don't know who you are, kz, but admire your decision.

My point, perhaps poorly made, don't let opposing opinion dim your desire to weigh in. And yes, cca, the net's a mess, which is the good news and the bad news. Kind of like democracy.

Oh, and I love this building... back to the subject at hand...

Well nm88, let me say hello, my name is Phil Boucher, and I had to lose my anonymity because I'm in a band that's gotten a good deal of publicity in the region.

Re: Berklee Expansion Plans

Everyone is saying "I don't know styles, architectural history, etc", when has that even come up in a conversation? With a few exceptions, most of the squabbling is about height, quality of materials, and activation at the streetwall. Hardly high minded architectural criticism. If you like a building (or dislike it) just attempt to explain your feelings in the best terms you can. Even if others disagree, just stick to your guns. As Toby said, its your opinion, own it! This board is hardly filled with in depth high minded architectural criticism, and if it was, I probably wouldn't be here. I get enough of that in my real life from Courbu fetishists, this is my nice escape to the real world, oddly enough on the internet. I think the only real snobbery on here is getting flack referring to steel as iron or concrete as cement, which is fully justified IMO (like saying ATM machine, or PIN number, ugh!).

Yeah, you can find out my identity with a single click below. Then there are the users with names like John Keith, or other regular posters who while technically anonymous talk enough about their personal lives it would take only a few searches to figure out who they really are. Not many on here hide their identity all too well, except F-Line, who I feel must have a secret lair of maps somewhere at the end of the Tremont tunnel.

I don't know if I love it, but its on the positive side of the scale. The windows I do love though. I'm hoping the glass on the corner is going to help to tie the whole building together, but even if its not perfect, it's unique, and distinctly Berklee. That last point being the most important. Despite being a prestigious institution, Berklee never really had a distinct image. Its buildings are all repurposed and pretty easily overlooked. Even if the building turns out to be the definition of suck, its still an icon.

Re: Berklee Expansion Plans

I think I saw you taking that picture, I was taking a very similar one from around that time/angle on the same day. I suppose it could of been somebody else I saw though. I had a beagle with me in case that jogs your memory.

As far as the topic goes, I think there is a difference in "liking" something as part of the urban landscape but being able to recognize it's not very good architecture. That's sort of how I feel about this building. It looks interesting to me (and in that sense I like it) but as a functional piece of the urban fabric I can see a lot of problems. Walking around it left me with a very cold and sterile feeling but maybe that's just cause it's not finished.

Re: Berklee Expansion Plans

I don't get up that far very often, so I only judge by the photos. It looks like a vertical dirigible hanger, or a Ju 52 that wants to be a building rather than an airplane.

Re: Berklee Expansion Plans

^ I like those visuals a lot better than what we got. The more angles I see it from the more bleh it gets. Like, this is it?

Can't say I recall any faces (or pets) but if it was right about 5pm and you saw a skinny dude rocking one of these spaceship lenses then I'm your guy.

Well probably not as my exif data says my pic was taken a little after 6pm and I don't think the guy I saw had such a fancy lens. I think too we might of been in different spaces, here's the pic I got which shows I was right by the Hilton;

One thing about this building I've realized is that it looks a lot better in pictures than in real life. Oh well.

Re: Berklee Expansion Plans

Ah yeah I was down at the Huntington entrance to the Pru. And I agree it looks better in pics.

Re: Berklee Expansion Plans

I like it, its ugly in a prudential center way, not ugly in a kensington way.

Re: Berklee Expansion Plans

I'm guessing S+M might mean "at least its not precast". I can go with that! One of my watches crapped out, so when I take it over to Yuri I guess I can go look at it and see for myself.

Re: Berklee Expansion Plans

can you explain what you mean?

The kensington was born ugly. The pru was born as a clean cut baby from the 50s but now shes old wrinkled and worn down compared to the younger generation, but still has the respect of being an elder.
