Emerson College's Paramount Center

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

You know a period of history is over when it's celebrated in mural form.

RIP Boston theatre, both institutionalized and now memorialized by Emerson.

[PS - since this building is set to open, maybe the title of the thread should be changed?]

When I walked thru here the place was hopping, lots of older buildings were being worked on,covered with scaffolding!

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

I walk by it several times a day, but didn't notice the mansard "roof" on the Arcade Building until you posted these!

I was just going to say the same thing! I couldn't really remember ever looking to the top there. It's a new wrinkle on the interesting facade (and falling curtain wall directly above).

Excited for scaffold to be dismantled.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

I hate the vinyl-siding covered top portion.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Yeah, something like terracotta would have worked better. Or hell, even glass could have worked.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

I'm hoping that it is tin. If so, then I think it will age to a nice dark gray and look great.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Oh god if only the Family Arcade was still there....that place was practically my day care center as a child.

Here's to you Family Arcade!!

I believe it is our old friend alucobond, which means it will keep its plasticky sheen for years to come.

I think someone upthread said that the words and what not are a projection. Which would be cool when it is actually turned on.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

This pic clearly shows the metal clad top. When I saw it the other day, I wondered if that's finish material (zinc?), or a prep for something else.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Looks like either an 'authentic' hot dipped iron 50/50 lead and tin roof, or a majority zinc alloy. Many old building in fact didn't use copper, it's just that the copper ones outlasted the hot dipped ones, thus making their appearance more common as survivors. Perhaps this is a stab at authenticity?

I guessed at zinc or a zinc aluminum, because from the ground it doesn't appear to have the mottling you expect with a lead/tin combo (unless the ratio is closer to 70% tin).

In any case, if this is the final thing, then I really applaud them. Interesting, historical (yet fresh!) choice.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Forgive my ignorance. What does it look like when it patinates? Solid grey like the rendering?

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Depends on what material it actually is. Could be a dapple grey, to something with blueish purple highlights, to a blued or parkerized finish depending on the material or whatever alloy composition.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Are they going to stencil or screen Bijou 1882 onto the clad?
