Emerson College's Paramount Center

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

It's amazing what a hardhat and a clipboard will get you.

I tried desperately to gain access to the Paramount through legitimate means, and after exhausting three hours, I abandoned all hope and just walked in. I entered the cavernous space from stage left.

I can tell you I wasn't prepared for the glory that unfolded before my eyes: It's a remarkable replication .....Lots of multi-hued golds with greens and reds. The murals looked exquisite and exotic. I was stunned. The ceiling is cobalt, and the starburst pattern is in place, however, without a chandelier at the present time.

Unfortunately, I was discovered, and asked to leave through the stage door at the back. I can tell you, though, I wasn't ready for the magnificence that unfolded before me. This is reason for elation!

I'm really looking forward to this. The first scheduled Celebrity Series event is a little over 6 months away (March 6). The Celebrity Series page doesn't have a detailed seating chart yet, but does show a separate balcony with a couple of boxes on each side.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

You bet! The boxes are there, and we are all in for a treat. I didn't realize this careful a replication could be possible. The gold is dazzling.

I was actually informed that the opening would be in December....probably a ceremonial-type opening or open house, so you won't have to wait until March of next year to see this.

I might also add that it looks much larger than a six-hundred-seat house. I was totally enthralled with it.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

any chance this will be used for events beyond theatrical ones? Perhaps as an occasional venue for live music. There are no venues of this size for music in that part of town.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

^The answer to this is, "YES!"

Check out the celebrity series events three posts above this.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

That row of arches looks kinda cheap but the ground level glass seems to work well.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

I don't see how this looks cheap, maybe a bit grim.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

The arches are part of the original Bijou fa?ade, no?

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Looks like stucco. Is it stucco?

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

It's the original Bijou facade. Ablarc, remember that with all the skim coating of sedimentary stone in Back Bay, a good part of the city really is mostly stucco.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

^ I guess that's what accounts for the slightly Mexican-looking final product. Not crisp.

Looks accurate, and actually an improvement.

Big granite blocks. Rusticated surface. (Just ran my hand over it on the way to nap time.)

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Granite is igneous, not sedimentary.

Toby, were you able to reach up high?

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

No. Just shoulder height on the corner and the doorway arch. Nice old finish on the blocks. Decided to interrupt my pursuit of nap time and spent a little while leaning against a lamp post across the street. It was easy to see how it might look like stucco in a photo. The discreet pebbling finish on the stonework, the tight joints between blocks, the uniform coloration. But I've stood on both sides of that wall. It's granite!

P.S. It looks less "cheap" in person, although it would have been nice if the panes of glass in the upper stories had some perceptible imperfections that made them look less like plexiglass!

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

A park in the Hayward Place lot? Seems awfully close to the Common, no?

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

How about an amphitheater park to keep the midtown theater district theme with an indoor/outdoor cafe (like Post Office Square)?

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Common needs work.
