Encore Boston Harbor Casino | 1 Broadway | Everett

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

Both are Valid points ^.
To me, driving would still be the option for most from/to the casino but having options is nice (ie footbridge, improved T service, shuttles, water taxis)

Perhaps for patrons but a large number of people coming and going will be employees. With hotel, restaurants, gambling, retail, etc., this is going to have a large workforce.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

99% of all Casino traffic is the opposite of commuting hours. PHS has 4000 employees and a 7 story parking garage in Assembly Row and I don't see any of you complaining about that.

Compare this to the casino where Wynn has proven at every one his locations (from Vegas to China) that his FREE private luxury buses reduce traffic and parking. Not to mention he spends millions on maintaining these buses himself.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

To be fair there is only one person complaining about casino traffic. He just does it a lot.

Your comparing the infrastructure from Vegas & China to surrounding areas of Boston?

Vegas built in the middle of the desert.
China built a whole section for the casino's.

Surrounding areas of Boston infrastructure is very old and outdated. Back when the Teaparty revolted over taxes

Wynn luxury buses will increase traffic. And overall most pedestrians like to drive themselves to the casino.

It doesn't matter how old or bad the infrustructure is the point made which you didn't even respond to was that casinos generate traffic during low demand periods for roads so that whole post was off topic. And busses reduce traffic not increase it because instead of needing 20 to 60 cars to get the same number of people you need 1 bus to carry.

What would you propose doing to fix the supposed traffic issue you see anyways. More transit will not happen in this political climate unless financed by Wynn and more road lanes don't help traffic they make it worse by causing more people to drive.

Citylover -- that "more road lanes cause more people to drive" is a false premise -- higher capacity roads don't make more people drive -- they just reroute drivers -- give most of them a good road and they will chose it over a town byway as long as the traffic is not extreme

Choosing to drive versus to take the bus, CR or subway or walk -- is all a matter of personal choice and personal life style just like the choice between city and suburb

To some driving offers needed anonymity, independence and solitude, while to others being able to sit and eat a breakfast and work while the train hurtles along is important. Give the commuter more options and surely some will take advantage of the increased diversity of manner of commuting. However, you are unlikely to convert a dedicated driver to a rail commuter barring a huge bribe unless you take away the keys.

Moreover, it is really pedestrian infrastructure that is what enables a city. People being able to walk to get the things they need, to see the people they want to see, to enjoy the things they want to enjoy. Transit is just what extends that walk ability to the next few stations.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

Wynn Entire development is going to increase traffic because of the location. Adding more buses along with everything else is an increase because the development is not centralized near anything.

This destination development is not centrally located near anything that will help the flow of traffic.

I would have rather see the Casino setup shop in the NorthStation development.

WOW

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

Adding vehicle trips to non-peak traffic is very different than adding traffic to peak traffic.
This concept seems to miss your brain every time you start railing against traffic carmageddon.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

The one good point in the traffic squabbles that I acknowledge is that we haven't seen a new comprehensive plan for Sullivan Square yet, as far as I know.

Now that Boston is on board state and city planners should really get to work on a Sullivan Square plan that does address the traffic flow and encourages some sort of redevelopment around Sullivan Square and Sullivan Square station. I know there are probably past plans floating around, but it is the time to make something good happen with money coming in from the casino that can jump start things.

I disagree that the casino should be delayed until they address Sullivan Square, but it is time that a good practical phased-in plan comes together.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

The Casino workforce is more likely to work Hospital-style shifts (7a to 3p, 3p to 11p, 11p to 7a) so that even the employee rush will be both a teeny fraction and non-peak compared to the 1000 that will drive in their own car to work at Partners 9 to 5.

Not only is his staff smallish and off-peak, but he's bought/building an offsite parking facility; near all his staff will arrive by shuttle bus from the Orange Line or from an off site staging. So employee traffic is way more irrelevant than his patron traffic.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

My point about Sullivan Square is that we have a 2013 BRA Sullivan Square study which was really just a big FU to Everett because it introduced three new traffic lights between 93 and Rt 99 which seem specifically designed to block or make extremely undesirable access to Wynn from I 93. Basically it was planning as blackmail.

But now we have Wynn willing to spend a significant amount of money on improvements to Sullivan Square and Boston willing to play ball so it would be good while Sullivan Square is surrounded by MBTA Surface lots for the state to take a look at any beneficial road realignments that would actually ease traffic flow between 93 to 99 and also establish the final street alignments for a Sullivan Square redevelopment.

Put in simple terms, don't miss this opportunity to use Wynn money to help kick start Sullivan Square redevelopment.

This is an old Wynn slide, but it shows some modest improvements to Sullivan Square:

Lawsuit after lawsuit, just when I think the Winn Casino will get built, another lawsuit appears. Are opponents just trying to wear Winn down so he just says, fuck it, and pulls out along with the thousands of jobs and tens of millions of dollars of tax revenue that go hand in hand with the project?

Walsh just got a better deal out of Wynn, Curtatone figures he can too if he holds out.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

Wynn set a precedent by giving into Boston's demands. Now everyone wants a piece of the pie.

That's such a weak argument. Concerned about cars polluting? Fund transit not highways.

Re: Wynn Everett Casino | Everett

If Curtatone really cares about traffic concerns, then he should be focusing his efforts on getting the damn green line extension built through Somerville. It is absolutely ridiculous how little has transpired in getting that extension built--the green line has been the plan for decades to mitigate for I-93 air pollution. The Union Square spur alone would do wonders for traffic management!
