Fenway Center (One Kenmore) | Turnpike Parcel 7, Beacon Street | Fenway

Re: Fenway Center (One Kenmore, Mass Turnpike PARCEL 7)

How was it dangerous? Did The Rat really cause that much crime?

Re: Fenway Center (One Kenmore, Mass Turnpike PARCEL 7)

Not that I recall. I guess it might get a little noisy when downstairs emptied out. Upstairs was comparatively sedate and the B stage seemed barely amplified... AC 10 or tweed Champ territory.

Re: Fenway Center (One Kenmore, Mass Turnpike PARCEL 7)

The Rat was about as crime ridden as any other place filled with teenagers with weird hair listening to strange music. AKA, your feelings may vary depending on age.

Re: Fenway Center (One Kenmore, Mass Turnpike PARCEL 7)

From what I recall hearing before starting at BU in '94 was that the real troubled place was Narcissus, which was on the other side closer to the BU bookstore. There were many gang related crimes including stabbings that occured here. In a way, BU really started the gentrification trend when they bought it just so they could get rid of it. The Rat was just rough-around-the-edges but fell victim to the gentrification trend that started with Narcissus closing.

The Rat was a tiny club the size of my apartment. Kenmore was much more than the Rat. Back in the early 90's when I hung out there, Kenmore was filled with shady characters. Pizza Pad and Nemo's Pizza were dicey places to grab a slice. Pizza Pad was always full of thugs.

The state transportation board delayed its expected May vote on the lease after two directors requested additional time to gather more information about the terms and the project’s engineering report.

The transportation department’s volunteer board must vote to approve all contracts worth more than $15 million, a measure created in 2009, in part to regain public trust after the Big Dig.

Was development easier before the big dig or is this just an excuse?

Praise the Lord!! This summer will go down in history.

I was just looking back at some old posts from last year and came across one making the proclamation that "2012 will go down as the year of the crane" (remember that?) and it's great to see over a year later how little things have changed. Exciting times indeed!

Don't think it caused crime, but I did get stabbed in the Kenmore station tunnel back in '92 on the way home from a show at the Rat. The area feels magnitudes safer (though somewhat dead) in its current incarnation.

Re: Fenway Center (One Kenmore, Mass Turnpike PARCEL 7)

As someone who has only been here since '05 it's almost impossible for me to imagine Kenmore as a shady area. It's all so innocuous now.

Jesus! Hope it wasn't serious!

Narcissus was actually one of three clubs in that building, each attracting a somewhat different crowd. None was a problem on its own, but the three groups didn't mix well at 2AM closing, which often led to some spectacular fights. Yes, Kenmore was somewhat rough in the late 80s and early 90s when I lived there, but never really dangerous if you paid attention and kept your guard up. I miss it tremendously.

Just a flesh wound; ended up with a nice scar. The folks at the Beth Israel ER fixed me up and I walked home. That incident kept me from using Kenmore Station for about a decade.

Re: Fenway Center (One Kenmore, Mass Turnpike PARCEL 7)

Will the guys over at Fenway Park be able to dictate when construction happens so that it does not interfere with a game? Imagine the horror if they use Brookline ave as a staging area to install a tower crane on a game day.

I don't think I've seen this rendering before:

That second rendering is actually what they showed in the preview for tonight's episode of Chronicle.

Re: Fenway Center (One Kenmore, Mass Turnpike PARCEL 7)

something is not accurate about today's Globe article. No prudent investor would put equity into a speculative development like this for a 6% return.

Re: Fenway Center (One Kenmore, Mass Turnpike PARCEL 7)

the precedent has been set and everybody is in line with their hand out before Menino leaves office. This is infuriating that they are even asking and Menino should foot the bill himself if he grants this bullshit.
