Four Seasons Tower @ CSC | 1 Dalton Street | Back Bay

Just curious - looking at those latest photos, would you say they're at about 50% of height? Maybe a little less?

architectural hate crime.

i assume you refer to how the bu-fugly sheraton "towers" obscure so much of 1 dalton from that angle. if so, i heartily agree.

also, to add my two cents to the percentage-of-height debate, i'd say in the pix it looks to be just over 40% final, total height.

I'm going to repost this one from Arlington, which is far enough to help "flatten" the buildings. This is clearly beyond the CSC concrete tower behind it, which is 371'. If this is 742' then that building is exactly 1/2 the height. If this is 756' then that building is 49% of the height.

It also looks like there's at least 28 fully formed floors. Remember that the bottom 6, plus 21 (upper mech) are all quite a bit taller than the average floor. The core itself pushes into 30. The 61 floor height of this building also skips a few floors. It appeared there were 58 windows to the top, which includes the 2 for the mech crown. So this would be ~30/58, where the average height for the 30 is probably slightly taller than the average for the rest of the floors will be. (I say probably because I believe the average residential floor is a bit taller than the average hotel floor, but nowhere near the heights in the podium/mech)

more than happy to defer to your well-reasoned take. you've actually put some analytical thought into this -- i was just eyeballing it.

thanks Beeline,

the moment is finally upon us....

The public is going to be like:
1. Oh, a new building going up.
2. Hmm, new building still getting taller.
3. Wow, that's really getting up there.
4. Jesus, that thing is tall!
5. OMG IT'S STILL GETTING TALLER.
6. WTF, HOW TALL IS THIS THING GOING? WHO GAVE THE OK ON THIS??
7. HOLY SHIT, IT'S AS TALL AS THE PRU!

Last time I pointed it out to my girl was probably three months ago when it was stuck at the Sheraton's height, to which she responded with probably the most blasé "huh" ever uttered by a human. I'll be back in town for the Super Bowl and will have to try pointing it out to her again... see if she's made it to phase 3 yet.

Same. I pointed it out to my girlfriend this morning coming from the Longfellow Bridge coming in on the Red Line. The actual structure (not just the crane) is actually peeking out just above the nearby rooftops for the first time and I thought it was pretty cool. Her response when I pointed it out? "Oh." But if a Corgi passes by on a leash, she'll have seizures in the street out of pure joy and excitement.

It's probably because people don't really care about skyscrapers other than people like us. It's the same response when you point out a play in football to someone who couldn't care less about sports.

(hence why I doubt we are going to get many, if any, responses like the ones outlined by Hubman)

The taller it gets, the more interested the "masses" will become. The same thing happened with MT. When it was 40+ floors you started seeing crowds of people gazing up at it. Right now 1 Dalton is hovering around the 30th tallest building in the city, in the shadows of the Pru. Once it adds 10-15 more floors and the glass is sticking out above the Sheraton, it will become much more of a conversation piece.

That's because we're a city of stubby, boxy, mid-rises. If we actually had a 1000-footer (gasp!) with some bold design, then people would be much more interested.

Two thoughts: 1) when I pointed out MT to my girl over the summer and said something to the effect of "that's that big tower you would've seen on the skyline going up a couple years ago" she had no idea what I was talking about, which backs up my hunch that oblivious folks stay oblivious even in the face of a big new tower. On the other hand 2) an awful lot of camera shots from Fenway Park this coming season are going to show this thing looming real large, in which case the masses will truly be well aware.

No, I really think it's what Kentie wrote.
