Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

Is that a gerbil tube on the third floor?

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

The hotel lobby seems to have a cafe that they imagine spilling out to the sidewalk.

They also seem to be proposing two very bizarrely-shaped elevators (H4, H5) in the lobby too in the middle of the grand staircase.

I LOVE funky elevators. More high rises should have cool elevators, they are so much fun.

Also, how the hell did I miss this exchange?
Not at all. I mean, very literally, a tool was being erected there.
I hope they don't rush things.
If they take it slow and not try to finish prematurely, this project will have a happy ending.

Too funny guys...

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

Boo, bait and switch. The color rendering has beautiful, graceful curved corners and the black and white is all square corners with a round bulge in the middle of the long wall.

The building that is the focus of the color rendering appears to be the High Rise. The low-rise building with the bulge is barely seen in the rendering. So it appears the high-rise, though straight-up/straight-down from the base up, should have the graceful curves you speak of.

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

I wonder if detailed, human-scaled ground floors will ever come back in vogue in architecture.

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

GLASS, MERCIFUL GLASS!
That said, the street level looks a little drab. Perhaps that could be remedied in the other building of this development? That stretch of Belvedere could really benefit from at least some retail space.

From my experience working at NU's CPS (the long concrete building), that area is completely dead, devoid of any pedestrian activities. No retail would survive for long there.

Just noticed that too. VERY bizarre looking. Wonder what that'll actually look like if/when it comes to fruition.

Chicken/Egg

Doubt it. The area is cut off from the plaza, the Prudential shopping center, and Mass Ave by the existing low rise building and the row of rowhouses. Directly across the street from it is the hotel loading dock/parking I believe. I will say that retail can survive if it serves the occupants of the new tower directly (i.e. something like starbucks) but it's unlikely that it will attract any other people.

I took the liberty of cropping out all the pretty renderings from the PNF for you guys who don't want to drain your hard drives:

Looking at that last pic, I worry about the glass on the upper floors. Could those be dreaded balconies?

I'm hoping for some metal piping to grid up the curtain walls - that's what it's always looked like to me, anyway. I do like the texture change, which is there in the drawings on the last page too, very subtly. I also have a feeling that they aren't sure exactly what it will be, which is why all the renderings stop at about the tenth floor.

^ Thanks for the laugh!!

Dreaded balconies? We've lived in two different high rises and both had balconies, which we used all the time! Balconies add living space and interest to the apartment! When ever we had people over, they always had to go out onto the balcony to check out the views!

I'm not saying it's bad if you live there. I'm just saying that aesthetically, they tend to do more harm than good.
