Station names should contribute to a location's sense of place and those backslash names rarely contribute.
Also, while its within walking distance of Inman, its also not nearly close enough to warrant changing the name of the station.

Honestly that's the one reason they might leave it College Ave. They should really just ditch the Tufts Medical Center name (it's changed too much for it's own good) and call it "South Cove" with "Tufts Med Center" as a subtitle. Make the South Cove exit for TMC on Tremont/Shawmut a full service entrance. Then name College Ave "Tufts University".

Bay Village?
It's not directly in the neighborhood now, but if the Pleasant St portal is ever reopened and that station connected to Tufts Medical, it will be smack in the middle of it.
But yeah, College Ave should 100% be Tufts University.

Back Bay, South Bay! Too many Bays!
But yes, South Cove or Bay Village. Shouldn't hitch a station name to an institution that has perennial identity crises about what their actual name is.

Meh, the South Bay isn't really known for much other then the mall for anyone who's not a history buff. "Back Bay" and "Bay Village" are distinct enough. They could even change it to "Back Bay Station" to really make it even more defined (IMO, any stop with a direct commuter rail connection should have "Station" after it).
Even "South Cove / Bay Village" isn't all that much longer of a name then "Tufts Medical Center" or "New England Medical Center", and would be very descriptive as to the area (has less syllables too). It sort of rolls off the tongue nicely too, kind of like "Charles / MGH".

Rename Tufts Medical Center to Washington Street, Downtown Crossing to Washington, Chinatown to Washington/Essex, Hynes Convention Center to Massachusetts Avenue, Central Square to Massachusetts/Essex.

College Ave. was indeed called "Tufts" when the short-lived commuter rail stop was there from '76-79. It'd be much better if Tufts weren't already used, because it pegs the location way better than "College Ave."...which could be anything from Powder House Sq. to Medford Sq. in walking distance depending on which end of the street. Out-of-towners are going to be much more interested in the campus, since every other big school in town has an explicitly named station on the spider map. And in-towners are going to use that as a placemarker for an alternate walking-distance stop to Davis. At minimum it's got to be a subscripted name.
Tufts Med Ctr. is bad simply because--as they've already found out--university hospitals have gotten into the same consolidation and name-changing habit as big corporate conglomerate hospitals. If it's not an unchanging century-level landmark like Mass General, this won't be the last time it has to change. I argued this in the "choose your naming rights wisely" discussion.
But...they made their bed on this, so two Tufts prepayment stations is a bad idea. The only place where duplicates or near-duplicates aren't going to confuse people is on non-prepayment streetcar stops or commuter rail duplicating a rapid transit station name.
I'd rather not mess with too many others, though, unless redevelopment or renaming conditions force the issue. It's a slippery slope. Start putting everything under consideration, and you inevitably get some that are worse than what they replaced...like the 1980's name changes on the Red Line or the over-tinkering with Auditorium-->Hynes/ICA-->no-ICA. There's got to be a really good reason to do it if it's going to be done at all.
