Harvard - Allston Campus

100 Western Ave.

Site has been cleared. I guess the clean up has been completed(?)

S&E (science and engineering) Complex (Do we have a thread for this very large project?)

Looks like site prep has begun. Some of the head houses are being demo'd and site prep related equipment and trailers are moving on to the site. South side of the site is more active than the Western Ave side. No postings on the fences yet.

From Harvard's construction mitigation site. This week at the Science and Engineering Complex
The deck will continue to be scarified in preparation for the topping slab.
Concrete form work and installation will take place for the topping slab.
Demolition of the "doghouses" will continue.
Equipment will begin to be lowered for below grade work.
Demotion materials will be hauled off site throughout the week.

I guess "doghouse" is the 'technical' term for what were covers over shafts and openings to below-grade floors.

For Charlesview
The buildings on the former Charlesview site were remediated and demolished in late 2014 and throughout 2015. Abatement of the under slab piping, and the demolition of the slabs and foundation was completed in 2016. Construction staging and construction worker parking will be located on the former Charlesview site to support proximate construction activities and additional work related to the construction of “Academic Way North” .

This is a permanent building at a temporary location. Will be interesting in some future year to see how they move it.

New parking lot being built on the south side of Rotterdam Street. This replaces a vacant lot which is between the 100 Western Ave site (to the East) and the S&E Complex (to the West).

I was looking for images for the new Rena Park, which is to the north of Mellone (Library) Park, and runs between N. Harvard and I believe Seattle St. Rena Park is basically complete, and apparently will eventually extend eastward. Didn't find any, but I did find this image of the lions installed at Mellone Park. The mystery of which building in Boston these were from was apparently never solved.

Mellone Park is about three years old. Doesn't look it.

Looks woodsy and really nice. Where do those stairs go? I'm having a hard time picturing an elevation around this area.

Edit - maybe it's for the hill? I came across this site with some other pics - this looks like a really, really nicely designed park. Some historian MUST be able to figure out where those lions came from...

Edit 2 - ah hell I'll post the pics from the site... but it's worth reading the descriptions, too.

Edit 3 - this is the plan for Rena Park:
renapark.jpg
from Harvard's website. The caption reads
Rena Park will be constructed directly North of Ray Mellone Park behind the Honan-Allston Library, forming the first segment of the planned Harvard greenway through the developing campus.
So hopefully there will be some sort of greenway that could go all the way to the Weeks Bridge from Cambridge Street, avoiding N Harvard and Western Ave altogether.

This will never happen, but since the whole of this part of Allston was once marshland/estuary it would be awesome if Harvard carved out some new marsh and a brook off the Charles... could be a nice water feature to go with said greenway.

As part of a community benefits package negotiated with the Boston Planning & Development Agency, Harvard will spend up to $3.5 million constructing two bicycle and pedestrian crossings over Soldiers Field Road in North Allston-Brighton.

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation will manage the design and construction of the footbridges, and the BPDA aims to construct the bridges in 2018.

In December 2015, the Task Force supported advancement with the design process, approving the refurbishment of the overpass at Telford Street and a new crossing at Everett Street.
