Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

The West Garage Expansion will be topped off on Wed, Oct 7. Just received the invite.

Facade on the garage is going up. Lots of shiny little silver squares that wiggle in the wind creating a very cool and dynamic effect. Hopefully photos and video soon.

It's called a "kinetic facade." About to head out there now. I'll try to get some pix of it for you guys. It's really neat and survived all the VE.

So this is really silly question... why is there no Terminal D? Is it a cargo terminal? Is there a development reason why?

My silly question is why "E" can't be reassigned as "D." It's not keeping me up at night but it just seems unnecessarily strange. It can't cost that much to adjust...

The cost is astronomical with no actual gain for all the wayfinding signage that would need to change. Logan isn't going to have a Terminal D just like O'Hare doesn't have a Terminal 4. (Coincidental that both airports have no "fourth spot!")

Today's weather was really shitty, but the wind actually helped show off the kinetic facade:

So, is this plan to expand a few gates for the A380's part of this new plan for the additional gates, the so-called West Concourse, or is this 380 jet expansion separate from that seemly much larger expansion plan? The Herald article seems quite vague, has MassPort sent out bids for this or just in the planning stages?

Atlantaden -- the A380 gates are being developed where existing gates are located [#E7B, E8A and E8B ] + some extra space for hold rooms and a top deck for more club space -- that is sort of phase one of the much bigger expansion of Terminal E which actually adds additional gates

From the Herald article. "The permitting process is expected to begin soon, and a Massport spokesman said phase one of the expansion, which includes several of the proposed gates, is expected to be completed by 2021. The spokesman said it was too early to estimate the cost of the expansion."

Thanks Whigh...so the expanded gates/space for the A380 wouldn't be completed till 2021? Am I wrong in thinking that MassPort seems to build in reaction to situations rather than building to anticipate situations?

Atlantaden -- No the A380 work is beginning with pre construction work if you go back to the original documents the schedule is fairly agressive

excerpt with my highlights in bold:
Valuation($): 100,000,000.00
REQUEST FOR QUALIFICATIONS
CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT AT RISK SERVICES

The MASSACHUSETTS PORT AUTHORITY (Massport) is soliciting Construction Management at Risk Services for MPA PROJECT NO. L1346, TERMINAL E A380 ACCOMMODATIONS, LOGAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, EAST BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS (the Project). In accordance with Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 149A, Sections 1 thru 13, Massport is seeking a highly qualified and competent Construction Manager (CM) to provide preconstruction services and implement the construction of the Project.......
The proposed project includes construction and commissioning of approximately 125,000 gsf of both new construction and renovation of existing space.
The goal of the project is to reconfigure and provide the required services to accommodate A380 Group VI aircraft.
In support of this goal the project will:
  • investigate the reconfiguration and modification of existing gates #E7B, E8A and E8B to allow for the installation of new two-level aircraft boarding jet bridges and vertical circulation nodes at these gates.
  • The addition of departure level concourse holding rooms and arrivals level de-boarding areas, adequately sized to accommodate A380 Group VI aircraft, with concession areas and other support spaces.
  • Reconfiguration and expansion of the existing security checkpoint and re-composure zone.
  • Relocation of existing land side concession areas to secure side areas.
  • Reconfiguration of the holding room at gate E6. Improve passenger experience enhancements. An addition of a third level shell space to be available for Airline Club fit-out.
  • Renovation, reconfiguration and expansion of the existing corridor connection to Immigrations and Customs.
  • Modification and renovation of baggage claim.
  • Modifications and improvements to the Passenger Greeter Hall.
  • Modification and renovation of the existing taxi lanes and the existing apron to accommodate the aircraft.
  • The project will incorporate sustainable and resilient design elements and will seek LEED certification.....
In addition to the construction services, the CM shall also provide Preconstruction Services which shall include, but are not limited to, cost estimating, scheduling, phasing and logistics, value engineering, document review to support the preparation of trade packages and constructability reviews...
The construction budget is estimated at approximately One Hundred Million Dollars ($100,000,000) with an estimated date of full beneficial occupancy in the third quarter of 2016.

So If they are on the original timetable the first Emirates A-380's should be able to land in Spring 2017

Ok, so they're going to demo those 3 gates and rebuild and expand them then.

Hopefully Massport plans this nicely to expand E and make it something a lot closer to a world class facility.n

The L1341 Renovation and Enhancements Enviro Report is a treasure trove of data -- I've been perusing it off and mostly on for the past 15 hours

There is much here which while unrelated to the Terminal E Renovation and Enhancements aka the A380 Project tells us a lot about what Massport Plans to do at Logan in the related time frame as the current project [circa 2015-2017]

https://www.massport.com/media/337677/TerminalE_EA_073015_signed.pdf

for example [as usual my highlights and comments [such as WOW are in Bold and I've separated some paragraphs into lists:

  • on Airline operations of the Group VI aka A-380 Class
Three airlines have announced their intentions to up-gauge current aircraft to new large aircraft. The anticipated aircraft changes include operations during the peak hours.
    • Emirates will replace the Boeing 777 to an A380
    • British Airways will replace Boeing 747-400 operations by A380s,
    • and Lufthansa will substitute the Boeing 747-8 for the Boeing 747-400.
  • and here's a tidbit on the plans for the Terminal E West Concourse -- aka the Big One -- now known as the Terminal E Modernization Project
    5.4.3.1 Terminal E Modernization Project
To accommodate existing and long range forecasted demand in an efficient, environmentally-sound manner that also improves customer service, Massport is considering a phased extension of the existing Volpe International Terminal.
As described below, the phased extension of Terminal E could:
    • add six to nine new aircraft contact gates , which would include three gates approved in 1996 as part of the International Gateway project, but never constructed.
    • New passenger handling and gate areas are being considered,
    • as well as additional customs and border patrol facilities to supplement the existing FIS areas in Terminal E.
    • A new direct connection to the MBTA Blue Line Airport Station would be also be constructed. -- special note to FLine -- WOW!
    • Following permitting and design, the initial phase could begin construction in late 2018 and connect to and extend from existing Terminal E.
This would occur as a separate project, after the Renovation and Enhancements is complete and in service in 2017.
The Terminal E Modernization Project is in the early conceptual design development phase.

Massport is considering filing the ENF with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) in the fall of 2015.
This submission would initiate the environmental assessment process and will identify the scope of environmental analyses that will be conducted to comply with the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA).

Thanks for pulling that stuff out, Whigh.

I'm dubious about a direct connection to the Blue Line - how does that help? First off, let's assume that the extension follows the established curving profile from the renovation, and ends at the farthest wall of the former hangar (any farther and it would impact other operations). That's about 0.3 miles from Airport Station, which is the same as the A-to-E connector end-to-end.

Even assuming many people will want to walk that distance (assisted by moving walkways), where are you dropping them? T.F. Green's station connector bridge is approximately 0.3 miles as well, but it puts you in the central ticketing hall. I've been picturing this extension as a simple concourse, but is Massport planning another ticketing hall on the other end? Would there be a hallway outside security? That would just make the walk longer.

Logan needs more direct access to the Blue Line, but I'm not sure this is the way.

Good find, thanks!!

Cosigned!!!!!

Blue Line connection, buses, and curbside lanes

Having a check in counter at the Blue Line station for the major airlines (Delta and JetBlue?) where departing passengers could check their luggage before boarding the shuttle bus might be more useful than an enclosed moving sidewalk.

If exposure to the weather while boarding the bus is a concern, I'd love to see a cost comparison of buying a batch of Proterra or BYD (or New Flyer battery electric) buses and building a fully enclosed boarding area vs the cost of building a long pedestrian passageway.

If the arrivals level is more prone to congestion than the departures level, would moving the shuttle buses / SL1 / etc to the departures level make sense? (There's probably an advantage to having the buses on the arrivals level for making fliers aware that they exist, but if the arrivals level can't support a decent level of service, maybe just invest in some signs to try to advertise the buses?)

What's the justification for having four lanes on the arrivals level? One for parking, a second for double parking, a third for travelling slowly in search of a double parking spot, and the left lane for 50 MPH departures toward the highway? (Or is the design speed of the left lane actually going to be something reasonable like 30 MPH?)

The TSA is not going to allow someone to check bags at a Blue Line station.

The EA does state that the C to E connector will be completed in 2016, that of the five former Southwest gates, the two closest to E will be international gates, and the other three will be part of C. The inside security connector for the two orphan gates, 37 and 38, between C and B will be completed in 2017.
