Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

It's going to be interesting to see how Emirates loads change over the next few months as more and more people know about the service and also the effect the Dubai flights have on Boston's European carriers.

I am a bit doubtful that in 2016, or 2017 we'll still have non-stop flights to Istanbul, Panama City, Tokyo, Dubai and Beijing. I hope I am wrong, but I could see one, or two carriers cutting their service once the incentives stop.

Barring a huge economic downfall, global conflict, or global pandemic, I see them all staying. The incentives only get you so much anyways and Boston isn't the only airport offering these.

Copa probably has the toughest fight out of the five, since Boston is strictly a spoke connection for them. It is important to note they have never dropped a destination in their history in the USA. Recent history shows that the other carriers have typically stayed in many of their US Markets.

The time immediately after 9/11 was a different story - Tokyo-Dallas/Las Vegas was dropped by JAL. Miami-Istanbul was stopped due to 9/11 as well. I had read somewhere that Emirates actually had plans to start USA destinations in the early 2000's before 9/11 as well and would have used A340's.

If any international carrier pulls out, it could be Alitalia or Iberia though looking at airfares this summer I don't even think that is likely. Alitalia could bite the dust though.

Interesting. Is the travel between Boston/New England and Latin America just not there? Or is it a case of local flyers flying on Delta (Atlanta) and American Airlines (Miami) and their north-south hubs? Is the business connections between Boston/New England and Latin America growing each year?

The travel is there but as you mentioned there is strong competition. Jetblue also has some 1-stop competition in Fort Lauderdale/Orlando/JFK to Colombia, Peru, and Costa Rica. There's a rumor that they will enter Quito, Ecuador from Fort Lauderdale soon as well. United technically isn't competition since they now codeshare but if the schedule is better someone may go through Newark or even Dulles.

Not sure about the last three years but between 2003-2011, Traffic grew overall (some markets up like Sao Paulo, Panama City, Buenos Aires, and tertiary Brazil but Lima, Santiago, and Ecuador had decreases) but business travel, especially to areas Copa serves 1-stop I cannot answer.

Massport released March 2014 numbers

Total airport passengers up 3.5% for month and 2.2% YTD
International is down 2.4% for month and up 1.7% for year

Emirates had 85% Load Factor but definitely helped by intro fares.

Copa Airlines had 75% Load Factor

Japan Airlines had a great month 93.5% Load Factor

I would be curious to know which of the European carriers are feeling Emirates the most.

Is anyone scheduled to fly United through their new concourse?

I won't get a first hand look until October when I'm on a United flight out of Boston.

Aer Lingus and Icelandair should not be affected at all.

My guess would be that Swiss would be affected the least. Two reasons: loyal following and they serve less destinations in 1-stop competition with Emirates than the others.

Also, there are people (typically larger families etc) who drive to JFK or even EWR to fly a gulf carrier like Emirates or even Air India/Jet Airways. Hopefully Emirates is taking that traffic as well.

My co-worker is from Egypt and he goes home twice a year. For the last 3 trips, he's been driving down to JFK because the fares to Cairo from JFK are a lot cheaper than the fares from Boston to Cairo. I think he's nuts for making the drive (he travels with his wife and 4 kids) but he says the savings by flying ex JFK makes it more than worth it.

So people will drive to JFK for reasons other than what carrier flies the route. But I do agree Emirates adding Boston will be noticed by those flying to the Gulf and India.

Has he looked at fares via Turkish Airlines/Istanbul?

I've driven to JFK a few times. You can park at an off-airport lot for around $100/week and if you figure $100 round trip for gas/tolls, if there's a fare difference of $200 or more it makes sense. Especially if you're traveling with more than one person. Turkish has made a lot of the fares to Europe more competitive out of Boston if you don't mind connecting in IST. I actually drove to JFK in January because Swiss (via GVA) had significantly lower fares to Istanbul than anything out of BOS. Next January I'm flying Turkish (via IST) out of BOS to Geneva for a ski trip. Fares out of BOS and JFK are almost identical.

Flights to Cairo are $810 from BOS on Turkish in early September. It's $870 from JFK on Egypt Air for the same dates.

Looks like your friend won't be driving to JFK for much longer.

If you're travelling solo - there's probably an interlined fare with a Jetblue/Delta or American flight to JFK on many airlines. Sometimes the interline fare could be cheaper than even the flight from JFK.

Orbitz and the specific carriers tend to list these flights better than expedia or travelocity.

You could always roll the dice and purchase a separate ticket to JFK if you cannot get an interline fare to work... I'd give yourself plenty of time connecting wise though.

Flew out of the new B connector on the 30th. Looks very nice, enjoyed grabbing a bite/drink at the Legal counter. Doesn't look like United put too much thought into passenger lanes, some seemed to deadend at a column and others had people blocking the hallway/thoroughfare. Still a step up from the rest of B. Next time I fly through I'll have to see if the Stephanie's is as good there as the one on Newbury.

In Re: Terminal B
I think it is time to throw a roof (even just an awning) over sidewalk of the "U" road segment on the arrivals level so that the passenger pickup area actually looks the part.

Due to starting a relatively long leisure route in Liberia, this makes me wonder if they try Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas at some point as well.

That would be great. When I went to Vallarta several years ago, I connected in Atlanta and had to stay overnight for Delta's one and only direct flight, which left in the morning. It was winter and we didn't want to risk missing a connection due to a delay at Logan -and it was a good thing we did because we would have been delayed had we left the same morning.
