Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

That would be great. When I went to Vallarta several years ago, I connected in Atlanta and had to stay overnight for Delta's one and only direct flight, which left in the morning. It was winter and we didn't want to risk missing a connection due to a delay at Logan -and it was a good thing we did because we would have been delayed had we left the same morning.

or fly there via LAX like I did

The numbers are there for a seasonal route.

I've seen a Turkish Airlines ad while on Skype, it wasn't specifically for the Boston flight though.

It's always good to see airlines expanding at Logan but I'm a little surprised JetBlue hasn't jumped into the Antigua market. Obviously they'd launch from Kennedy but I'd have to think there's money to be made flying maybe three weekly flights from JFK and offering Saturday service from Boston.

Turkish Airlines flight #81 landed at 4:37 this afternoon. Zero media coverage. Strange, especially remembering the brouhaha that accompanied Emirates' inaugural flight.

I agree - I think Jetblue could scare American off the route. Delta also serves it as well. I would also add Cozumel to the list.

There may be more tomorrow- probably something going on before the flight leaves tonight.

Small story in globe - though they dedicated some items to Sunday Travel section concerning Istanbul

Don't be stupid, JetBlue won't scare American off that route. There are plenty of people paying F fares to and from Antigua.

Besides, with JetBlue's newfound labor issues they're going to have to start acting like a grown-up airline. Their competitive advantage in high cost markets like Boston and New York is about to go poof.

Long overdue on posting these:

Very nice addition to Terminal B, lots of color, expansive glass walls, interesting ceiling treatments and detail, love the lamps!! CSTH, thanks for the photos especially since I'll probably never use Terminal B.

Do you have numbers on F loads and average fares?

Very interesting and exciting. Sounds like a fair bit of reconfiguring of gates, not too much on new gates. Is this the westward expansion of the terminal as has been talked about.

Good that they are adding new space. I don't fly international a lot, but when I have, the flights tend to leave in bunches and are larger, so E gets crowded pretty quickly. Hopefully this alleviates some of that.

I assume the issues that held back Boston from landing fully loaded 747s have been overcome either through new engines or longer runways for the much larger A380.

The main question becomes, who wants the A380 to come in? British and London are the highest volume, but I think frequency is pretty valuable on that route (although the 2 evening flights are timed close). Lufthansa to compete with Emirates on the India traffic? China growth? New routes?

choo, its a modest westward expansion. They push the building envelope out at the northwest corner and the whole west quadrant for passenger holding rooms on two levels. As there are no new gates, seems to me this will be done in phases. I think the lon-proposed wing angling off to the south/southwest is put off indefinitely, or dead.

One of the benefits of this modest expansion is the space that will open up for new airline lounges on the top level! Definitely a plus to get some expansive windows/views in the club rooms!

Well, this pretty much is that wing. They're adding 2 gates in a new addition to the airside to replace a constrained pair.

There are no two new gates. The gates being reconfigured are 7B, 8A, and 8B.
7A gets some work done, because its next to 7B. IIRC, the original scheme stretched the proposed wing along the Terminal E exit road almost to a point opposite the old AA hangar.

Massport has released the numbers for April.

Total Airport Passengers for April: 2,721,967 (up 6.8% from April 2013)
Total Airport Passengers Through April: 9,229,498 (up 3.5% for same period of 2013)
Total International Passengers for April: 408,857 (up 6.8% from April 2013)
Total International Pax Through April: 1,308,839 (up 3 % for the same period of 2013)

Loads:

Copa - 90 pax a flight (72%)
Emirates - 236 a flight (88%)
Japan Airlines - 147 a flight (79%)

There are no new gate numbers, true, but this is more than a reconfiguration. The extension to the terminal building is being constructed, just without increasing the total number of gates at the terminal.

There have been several revisions of Massport's plans for Terminal E, and some older ones might have included a massive West Concourse. More recent ones that I've seen have a modest expansion basically equivalent to what is being executed here.

Given Massport's recent construction binge and the enormous emphasis they're placing on building Logan up as an international transfer point, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that their current gate count in E is sufficient for future traffic - I'd expect them to overbuild right now, if anything (projecting that Boston will ever see 3 A380s at once outside of a diversion spree is a pretty spectacular overbuild, IMHO). In any case, the better approach for future international capacity is probably to rebuild the low-E gates and attach them to FIS, while moving Southwest over to AA's current gates in B. That's cheaper and doesn't cost you hangar/parking space.

I would round up to 89% for the Emirates (88.996%) ;)

European Traffic was also up 4.6%/ about 10,000 pax for the month YOY.

Seems like a good showing for Emirates. I wonder how Turkish will impact them.

Also wonder how Hainan will impact JAL. If JAL has a base that continues to Beijing, it could be some lost numbers.

Overall, those growth numbers for Logan seem extremely healthy.
