Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

Seems like a good showing for Emirates. I wonder how Turkish will impact them.

I'm not sure how much since Istanbul hub can serve Western/Eastern Europe. The question may be how do both airlines affect the European incumbents. Prices aren't too cheap for summer travel right now so the true war of attrition may start in October.

I'm wondering if Massport will "classify" the Istanbul flight as Middle East or Europe. You can make a case for either/or. Geographically - Europe (airport is in Europe) Culturally - Leaning towards Middle East. Turkish has also been serving the route so far with different aircraft (A343 and A333 have both been used) so it may be hard to get the numbers until the DOT releases them a few months down the line.

Also wonder how Hainan will impact JAL. If JAL has a base that continues to Beijing, it could be some lost numbers.

Shouldn't have any impact. The Boston-Tokyo flight does not connect well to China on the return home and Hainan is gearing this flight to served Beijing's (and the rest of China's) middle class with tourist packages to Boston and New England in general.

equilibria, fair enough.

Can one currently clear customs/immigration after deplaning at any of the E1 gates?

I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think so. The reason the other gates have towers is because passengers need to be funneled to the lower level without mingling with anyone in the gate area. That wouldn't be possible in the Low-E area, since those are just jetway-door connections.

Of course, some of those were the original international gates at Logan. Go figure...

Emirates will fly a B77w starting august 1, according to airliners.net.

That's the first 773 at Logan right? I know AF and BA use 772's... can't think of any others since most of the other EU airlines use 744's or A330's

AF has used the 77W/777-300ER on a scheduled basis before. Additionally BA has also sent their 777-300ER periodically to sub for other aircraft.

Nice to see Emirates adding some capacity on the route. They must fee advanced bookings warrant the increase.

Yea, I've see British Airways sub the 77W a few times over the last several months. I always do a double take just to make sure it's not the 772.

News from the domestic front:

The revived PEOPLExpress will fly non stop daily from Logan to Newport News VA starting June 30th.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday. Let see how long this lasts.

So I just flew JetBlue for the first time, and went to Terminal C for the first time (or at least, for the first time in many years/within memory). The terminal seemed pretty standard and comfortable, easy to navigate, pleasant to look at, etc. The only complain I have is we just landed and walked through the terminal at about 9pm and it was a complete ghost town. Are the terminals deserted by 9pm?! Seems pretty early to be packed up and locked up and have no outgoing flights.

Also, LAX (or Terminal 3 at LAX, at least) was a total shithole. It looked old, tired, and the TSA checkpoint was clearly shoed in but the area was built pre-9/11. There was only a very small handful of food options, and no breakfast options whatsoever. It was also filthy and wifi was completely busted. No televisions or sit-down bars or anything entertaining. I don't know how the rest of the airport is, but it was truly horrendous and horrifying that such a major hub was so atrocious.

Friday nights and Saturdays are not very popular times to fly out of Logan--especially not on jetBlue routes. You'll see many flights arrive in the evenings and late evenings, but remember that people are inclined to leave the airport as soon as they land... no reason to eat at the Legal Seafoods if they can go to them in the city, you know?

As for LAX, I agree about Terminal 3 (really all of the north terminals). The international terminal was just redone and expanded--it's gorgeous! And LAX recently announced several multi-billion dollar renovations and additions to the airport, so it shouldn't look so atrocious for long (hopefully).

Not surprising Logan can feel quiet after 9 pm. At that point, there's still a large number of flights coming in, but a lot less going out. People get off the plane and either go right to baggage claim, or out to their transport. There's a large number of flights that leave from Logan between 4pm and 8 pm. Beyond that things get quiet, unless you're over in terminal E where a number of flights over to Europe leave.

what terminal will they be operating out of?

It's not known at this time. I'm leaning towards E due to flight times but it could be anywhere but C.

Flight leaves Newport News at 6:00am arrives in Logan at 7:20.

Return is 8:20AM departure from Logan arriving at 9:30 in Newport News.

Seaplane service from Logan (for now) straight to the East River is supposed to start sometime this month: http://www.bostonglobe.com/business/2014/05/23/seaplane-service-boston-without-water/

It sounds like their end goal is to shave time on the Boston end by operating from the Seaport or Financial District docks straight to their East River dock. The article notes they're probably going to run into problems trying to get space carved out in Boston Harbor. Not insurmountable I think, just look at Lake Union in Seattle where seaplanes coexist with the most clueless of suburban boat owners and kayaking tourists.

I'm aware that no one expects this airline to last, but you'd think that there would at least be a press release from Massport about it. They're paying a lot of the cost of plastering the T with ads for all their other new airlines, after all.

BTW, thanks for asking them. :)

Not a problem!

I think Massport is more concerned about preparing the big celebration for the Beijing flight next week. The airline is advertising in Virginia however.

Though I agree that this airline may not last over a year, the airline is doing the smart move starting this specific route instead of launching all service into fortress hub airports (they are doing Newark and Atlanta though)

Currently there's no service between the two metro areas since Delta decided to switch from Norfolk to Richmond to punish JetBlue for starting Detroit.

200 people a day in each direction traveled between the Hampton Roads metro area (Newport News and Norfolk) and Boston last summer. The average 1-way fare from the two areas was 204 with Southwest being the low-fare carrier at $184 one way average.

I just priced a ticket with 1-carry on for 162. It would have been 152 with no carry-on and 1 checked bag. You can carry a small backpack for free. As you see they are going to nickel and dime people. People that aren't concerned about miles, points, or airline status probably will still take this flight.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not convinced they'll fail. They seem to have learned the right lesson from JetBlue: Find solid markets that are underserved with direct flights, and connect them to everywhere. They also have a lot of subsidies from Newport News behind them and a mature airside operation thanks to the partnership with Vision. If they can pick up military contracts, they could do OK.

I have no reason to go to the Tidewater, but I'd try them if I did. I don't expect Massport to wrap a Red Line train in PEX colors, but the FIRST FLIGHT EVER of this airline is leaving from your airport in less than three weeks. At least letting people know which damn terminal to go to would be nice. :)

Spirit will do a daily seasonal Boston-West Palm Beach flight starting in late November.
