Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

Necn will air a story about the a380 gates at 644 and 844.

Surprisingly the return flights are not red-eyes.

I always wondered why there isn't more non-red-eye service between LAS and BOS. Is it demand? Limited landing/takeoff slots? The demand seems to be there since the daytime flights are priced at a hefty premium over the red eye ones and they don't see to have an issue filling the daytime flight.

More seats coming on Lufthansa next summer.

One flight will have 747-8 on the extra Frankfurt flight.

They will have premium economy as well on the regular 747 flight (LH420/LH421) and the Munich flight. They are removing First from LH420/421 and trimming biz on BOS-MUC.

BOS-MUC will be a four class flight in the summer.

WOW Air service is now official.

http://www.jaunted.com/story/2014/10/22/111125/09/travel/WOW+Air,+Iceland's+Cute+Airline,+Announces+Boston+and+Washington+DC+Flights+from+$125

6 weekly flights from BOS (no Saturdays) to Keflavik Airport in Iceland. They are only allowing connections to London-Gatwick and Copenhagen. Baltimore will also be served 4 times a week.

Fares under $400 and can be as low as $250 but there are some steep baggage fees (about $50 for first bag each way) and there's a strict carry on-limit of 5kg for free and a $25 fee each way to extend it to 12kg. You have to pay a British pound to select a seat each way as well.

An Ultra Low Cost Carrier has arrived to the Transatlantic Market.

Just love all of this service that's coming online-Boston and the nearby New England region is creating a nice 21st century economy-health care/biotech, academia, technology, financial/banking, tourism, all alongside your standard consumer goods companies that are are are trying to become global players.. Great stuff.

Some Logan News:

  1. Virgin Atlantic has begun Boeing 787-9 service to Boston, but has subbed in A333/A346 for the past week or so.
  2. Japan Airlines is operating on a new schedule (arriving at 17:00 instead of 11:00)
  3. JetBlue has begun seasonal weekly nonstop service to Liberia (Costa Rica), Puerto Plata, and St. Lucia.
  4. Aer Lingus has announced daily 767 service (replacing 757) on the Shannon-Boston route in Summer 2015.
  5. Lufthansa is adding Boeing 747-8i service to Frankfurt, replacing one of the existing 747-400 flights.
  6. American Airlines to Add 5th Daily Los Angeles – Boston Service from June 2015
  7. WOW Air/Cathay Pacific starting up in 2015.
  8. Iberia is operating a one-time MAD-BOS-JFK (IB6169) on November 14 on A340-500, any idea what this is?

Any predictions on future routes/airlines? Now that A380 gate construction has begun, which airlines will start A380 service in 2016?

Will Gov. Patrick’s departure in January mean an end to new intl. service from BOS?

I doubt it. Massport has been pushing it more than he has, and it's not like a Republican business-first governor would have any reason to be against this.

Nice to see AA ramp up LAX-BOS. It was not too long ago they had reduced it down to 3 x daily and now it'll be back up to 5. Boston is benefiting from AA expanding their LAX operation.

The timing on the 4th flight to LAX is a bit odd - leaves LAX at 5:15 pm and lands in Boston at 1:44 am.

Not sure if anyone has flown them lately, but their new 737-800'S are pretty nice. I flew on one back from LAX the other day. Leather seats, touchscreen TVs in the seat backs, upgraded overhead bins and what felt like better seat pitch. the TVs also had the best real time flight tracking I've ever seen on a plane.

I once flew on a Delta Boeing 737-800 from Boston to Las Vegas with a stopover in Dallas.

It was a very smooth flight!! And the engines were super quiet!

Unless this happened 10+ years ago, you flew American.

What happened to the Mexico flights they were talking about?

JetBlue just announced service to Mexico City from Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando. Who knows - maybe they'll take a shot on Boston-Mexico City.

Yes the AVOD 73A fleet (ships N939NN/3LC [and higher]) is increasingly being deployed on BOS/DCA/IAD-LAX but rotate throughout the system and aren't dedicated to these routes. The pitch isn't any different in fact seats will be added as part of the USAIR takeover. Bins are no different than Boeing Sky Interior 738s.

And of course the FC offering on this route has been completely gutted since September 1st.

JetBlue has begun seasonal weekly nonstop service to Liberia (Costa Rica), Puerto Plata, and St. Lucia.

Awaiting the mass hysteria, even though it's the wrong Liberia.

Flew the inaugural flight to Liberia/Guanacaste Costa Rica - got a free t-shirt and JetBlue had free continental breakfast before the flight. The airline also gave out a couple pairs of roundtrip flights, 20K True Blue Points, caps, and giftbags during the flight.

On the way home I did notice in Terminal E that the baggage area does say B6 898 LIBERIA ----- why don't they just add CR or Costa Rica on the end.

Flight was about 80% full going down and 70-75% full on the way back.

Bob Weiss of WBZ/CBS reported that a South American airline is strongly considering adding service: http://boston.cbslocal.com/2014/10/...ss-tourism-continues-to-grow-and-set-records/

If it happens there are three options:

Boston-Bogota on Avianca
Boston-Sao Paolo on TAM which will be renamed due to merger with LAN
Boston-Viracopos (Sao Paolo's Manchester Airport) on Azul

Boston-Bogota could be served with a 120 seat A319 so it may be the most likely candidate. However, Avianca doesn't offer the connections that Copa does in Panama and Chicago probably would be a better option for them.

I think at the minimum, JetBlue will add 1 or 2 weekly Caribbean destinations in the middle of 2015 = maybe Barbados or Curacao. Qatar or Etihad announcing service would not surprise me. Personally, I would like to see Vancouver, San Jose de Costa Rica, Copenhagen, and Barcelona happen. I heard a slight hear-say rumor of SAS starting Copenhagen.

JetBlue just announced service to Mexico City from Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando. Who knows - maybe they'll take a shot on Boston-Mexico City.

No chance in hell for Tel Aviv or Mexico City - JetBlue starting the latter from Orlando and Fort Lauderdale makes it even more difficult for an AeroMexico to come in and compete.

Boston-Bogota on Avianca

I agree that this is the most likely.
If Azul or LAN/TAM come do VCP/GRU-BOS, they have to use either a 767-300ER, A332, A350, or a 77W on the route, all of which seems like too much aircraft for the route compared to Avianca's A319.

Another interesting fact: GRU-BOS-NRT is only three miles more than GRU-NRT, but the GRU-BOS flight would probably be a redeye, leaving a ~4 hr connection to the JAL flight.

In terms of future Jetblue destinations, I can see ATL, GUA, SJO, and PAP (Port au Prince). I don't know if they would want to compete with Delta's stronghold on ATL/MSP.

I can also see either Qatar or Etihad coming to BOS, maybe doing a fifth freedom stopover in BCN/MXP. I don't know whether Korean Air will want to come now that JL, HU, and CX are in the market.
