MBTA Winter 2015: Failure and Recovery

Re: MBTA & Regualr Driving may be Shut Down During Coming Snowstorm!

Well, they are median strips, and get about as much love as the median strips of a highway. I'm not sure I'd call that great planning, just what happened to the grand visions of 'boulevards' when nobody cared about anything but automobiles for most of the 20th century. Look at Comm Ave in Allston/Brighton for instance, with those sad looking strips of grass, the ones that haven't been turned into giant asphalt parking areas anyway.

Re: MBTA & Regualr Driving may be Shut Down During Coming Snowstorm!

Gotta love reading comments on articles about the T's snow performance. People are fucking oblivious as to how the world works.

"What do you mean lack of investment? They raise the fares every year!"

Re: MBTA & Regualr Driving may be Shut Down During Coming Snowstorm!

I don't think that they'll be raising them this year at all, especially not after what has happened today.

Besides, they just raised the fares last July, if I remember correctly.

Gov. Charlie Baker was in the news, and during an interview, he had stated that there was absolutely no excuse for the snafu that took place today, and vowed to find a fix to the problem.

I might be going a little soft, & I normally don't care for Republicans, but for a Republican, he does not seem bad at all. He seems to be working WITH, NOT AGAINST the people in Massachusetts. Even though I didn't vote for him.

Re: MBTA & Regualr Driving may be Shut Down During Coming Snowstorm!

Gov. Charlie Baker noted that some of the aging rail cars date back to the early '70s and said that a solution to what happened this morning must be found, while he also acknowledged the new rail cars are still years away.

The news media says that their is a pending lawsuit on that issue.

Never fails! Seems that every time negotiations take place, a monkey wrench somehow gets thrown in - as with what used to happen with the rebuilding of the World Trade Center in New York!

Forecast is for
6 inches Thursday (Feb 5th)
5 to 11 inches Sunday (Feb 8th)

But the potential for more. This forecast says 27.5" to 30" in the next 10 days

Guess my walking commute ain't so bad these days.

;)

Re: MBTA & Regualr Driving may be Shut Down During Coming Snowstorm!

They are currently towing all cars parked on the even side of Bay State Road (yes, legally parked cars). Started about ten minutes after the mass text from BU went out. There have been major traffic jams on the road all day - one car slowing down trying to park, or actually stopped, gums the whole works up.

It's important to note that's only the Euro model. One scenario of many right now. The NAM has been the most accurate for the snowstorm predictions in the past 10 days.

Excellent.

Excellent.

And legally, as in proper distance from the curb legally?

He was against keeping the gas tax tied to inflation. That took literally hundreds of millions of dollars out of our transportation system for the next 10 years. He's gonna have a tough time fixing the problem without any money.

There are still residual delays in effect from yesterday throughout the system.

The MBTA is STILL suggesting that people should bundle up accordingly for long wait times to board the trains & buss, and also says that the present delays probably won't go away until sometime next week.

Plus the Super Bowl Celebration is today in about a few hours. The subway system will be tested and overcrowded again today.

Considering that the problem is often that snow/water is ingested into the trains (while warm & operating) but then freezes up when they stop moving, this problem is not going away so long as there's so much moisture, in piles, available to be ingested, and getting so cold overnight.

I highly doubt that very many people will be going into Boston for the parade, especially since this is a weekday and most people are either at work or in class during the day. I still think that the T is going to have another seizure today though, sadly.

Parade's been underway for ~1hr. Subway is flowing freely 'cept for the bad-all-week surface Blue Line. NECN vid shows small crowds. We dodged that bullet.

It already is, sadly. The Red Line and Orange Line are running much better than yesterday, but still worse than usual. The commuter rail (especially the Fitchburg Line and Worcester Line) were an absolute mess this morning.

Anecdote: The 405 outbound Fitchburg Line train was cancelled today, and the 453 was running well behind schedule, so by the time it arrived at Porter (around 9:30), the platforms were full of people who were waiting for either the 453 (8:50) or 405 (9:05).

I arrived at the station at 9:20, because I was using this handy website (Live MBTA (Keolis) Commuter Rail Train Mapping by Stefan!) to track my train. Upon arrival, none of the passengers or employees knew whether/when the train was arriving. I showed them (including employees) the website, and informed them that the train was now boarding at North Station and should be there in 12-15 minutes or so. The T employees wrote down the website so that they could help people in the future. (First lack of customer service by the T).

Some passengers were wondering whether the train would be making the 405's stops (i.e. Kendal Green and Lincoln), because that train was cancelled. The conductor told them they were SOL. The passengers, obviously pissed, left. A couple minutes later, when the train was almost fully boarded, the conductor radios the engineer and asks whether the train will be stopping at Kendal Green and Lincoln, and the engineer says yes. Too bad those would-be passengers were long gone. I thought this was the most ridiculous public transit customer-service, I have ever seen.

I'm going to print and post flyers with QR Code's linking to Sefan's CR tracker at Porter Station tonight. Any potential backlash?

Can't wait for the Billion dollar casino to be built in Everett one of the worst congested areas outside the city.

Love to know why the MBTA hasn't had a massive overhaul in the last 25 Years? Must be those MBTA pensions.

Remember the Taxpayers and the customers pay for this shitty service.

What? It's the bloody pension's fault that the state screwed over the T's finances and won't fix them? I'm happy to see the pension system examined as part of a potential fix, but Jesus Christ, I'm so done with that being blamed as the reason for the T's shit performance.
