Is that the current design? I though the edged out area on the south side was removed to give it more of a Hancock Tower look.

Based on the floorplans I would say the street render of the podium is pretty accurate, but I have no idea about the tower. That might be an older render.

Also does anyone have any idea where that stairwell at the corner of the Burhman building goes? The one on the ground floor at the corner of Washington and Summer that seems to go into the primark? There is no door there and it doesn't show up on the floor above or below.

The steel cage is starting to rise. I'm surprised we have so few updates on this. Don't any of you live/work in downtown Boston?

I'll try to grab some pics this weekend. I held off because podium construction is so slow and frustrating, but I think it's exciting enough at this point to warrant some visual documentation.

I'll snag some crappy iPhone shots. I walk by every morning and afternoon.

I watched them raise the screen panels (Peri LPS) on Tuesday morning. It's really cool how they do it with the crane. Those red clips that hang off the slab are the guides for the rails that just glide along up. Very innovative. Leave it to the Germans!

As I said before too, now that the screen has been completed, you can get a feel for the massing, as that is the building's true shape now. The hole is officially gone and a solid structure is in its place. I work next door, so I'll try to take some pix every so often. I'm always rushing to/from work & meetings. I tend to just admire the site and walk at the same time.

anyone want to guess when/if the smaller of the two cranes will be raised higher? Looks like there is only another 2 or so stories before the building reaches the height of the cab on the second crane. At the current pace, that's about 15-20 days from now.

Pace should start to increase soon as the floors get smaller. Also, more manpower to devote to the new building with the old one essentially done.

u beat me to it :) I only had one lame iPhone pic ur pics capture it nicely ,amazing to see it in person!

Agreed! It's incredible to see something there. I've never known the site as anything but a pit; it's still almost shocking to me that this is happening.

I haven't been by since all the yellow screens were up so its interesting.

I remember the old Filene's but the hole has been there so long I'm used to looking down at this site instead of up! Very cool

It's been what? 10 months since they re-started this? Nice to see in such a short time a big change has happened.

Just imagine that this thing will almost be topped out in a year from now. And the Roche Bros. should be opening in 5-6 months.

and yet the damn Barnes and Noble space still sits vacant right across from this site for what seems like the better part of a decade now.

Millennium's podium (and maybe even just the Burnham stores alone) opening up should spur interest in that B&N space. It boggles my mind how that has remained empty because there's so much foot traffic on Washington.

I always assumed the owner of that site was waiting for the Filene's development to impact the neighborhood so he or she could market the property to a more high-end retail tenant, luxury condo/apartment conversion or some combination of the two.

The ground floor space in the tower building would be perfect for a restaurant with a big outdoor seating area.

I shot these after work on Friday:

So, are they going to clad a few floors behind as they go, or is Boston going to have a 600' bright yellow tower for a few months?

*Sorry if I missed an answer to this already...

Typically with CIP construction the cladding trails the overall height by a couple floors. The yellow screens actually climb with the tower. As they complete lower floors, they raise the screens up another set of floors. New screens aren't added, so we won't have a 625' yellow tower. The screens are solely for safety purposes. When the facade on lower floors is completed (and thus safe), they just raise the screens up to the floors yet to be completed.
