MIT East Campus - Kendall Square Gateway | Cambridge

Winfield ^^ nice find. Welcome to aB. I enjoyed your photos. Thanks for sharing.

Digging it ... from the beginning till now. Nice stuff.

This thing has an impressive visual impact from the esplanade across the river, its the tallest from the perspective. Cambridge would really look nice with a couple or three moderately tall buildings.

I dont 100% understand why there are so many obstructionists in Cambridge against taller buildings in Kendall sq, its not like it had a soul to begin with. I would think it would give some folk a sense of civic pride but I guess they can't get beyond old ideas like traffic and shadows

^ not to mention, the design choice of a cantilevered tower preserves the original appearance of the historic brick building beneath. Since the brick building was a full facadectomy, they could have easily gone with the cheaper/easier non-cantelever (e.g., tower emerges directly out of the brick building)....but the fact that they didn't means that they paid homage to the site's heritage. Kudos to that. We have a lot of hokey tacked-on appendages in Boston, but these folks avoided that.

So if this is Cambridges new tallest at 29 floors and 342ft the residential phase 2 of mxd at 135 broadway should be the next tallest at 34 floors. Thatd be great to have 2 towers break the plateau becoming the next tallest on the way towards volpe building their tower which they want to go up to 500ft on.

At 34 fl it should be right around 400ft so that will be a nice little cluster over there. This tower looks great and 135 broadways massing looks very good too it has the shape of a mini hancock. In a couple years Cambridges skyline will actually be pretty complementary vs completely overshadowed.

I actually remember hearing regular people around the city complaining about MT being too big and now its universally celebrated and I cant imagine Boston without it. I bet once Cambridge gets these great new buildings theyre going to be proud of them because theyre well designed and then that should open the door for more to come. Once you break the ice its a lot easier to keep going, plus they need the space more than almost anywhere in America.

So if this is Cambridges new tallest at 29 floors and 342ft .....

Where do you get these numbers? Does it include the box on top?

From 6/7. Click in to view larger. I'm liking the tallest a lot more than I thought I would.

Per MIT docs, the top of building is 315'-0"
https://kendallsquare.mit.edu/sites...ndallSq_SoMa_SpePer_GraphicsD_Building4_1.pdf

Building 5 is 270'
https://kendallsquare.mit.edu/sites...ts/MIT_Vol_III_SoMa_Final_DevPlan-12-SecE.pdf

Building 3 will be 235'
https://www.cambridgema.gov/~/media...s/sp302_303_mit/sp303_bldg3_design_plans1.pdf

Building 1 at One Broadway (NoMa) will be at 295'
https://www.cambridgema.gov/~/media...ts/sp302_303_mit/sp302_design_submission1.pdf

I believe the first one is incorrect. It's from 2015 and if you look at the last page you'll see that the design is different. Notably, the floors are paired in 2's instead of 3's.

The second one, Building 5, shows it's 280' according to page 6.

I agree with your heights on buildings 3 and 1.

Thats my bad yea 315’ it was listed wrongly here
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_and_structures_in_Cambridge,_Massachusetts

Cambridge wicked local has 135 broadway at 350ft
https://www.google.com/amp/s/cambridge.wickedlocal.com/news/20181017/four-new-buildings-coming-to-kendall-including-tallest-in-cambridge%3ftemplate=ampart

So still same point Cambridge gets 2 new tallest towers in a row and then hopefully is capped with something substantial at Volpe. Theres talks of 500’ but well see.

I'd be happy with 1400', but I will meet you in the middle.
