Rose Kennedy Greenway

I think the Greenway would be better shaped by letting free capitalism takeover the direction of the park. Government intervention seems to be holding this park from really blossoming. The problem here is the greedy politicans are looking for handouts and private institutions are having a tough time to even consider investing in this area. The greenway should have already been booming this summer and investments soaring into this area. Then we should be on concentrating on Fan Pier and the Seaport District.

The big dig costs ran around 15 Billion and a killed drive by pedestrian that will end up costing the tax payers another 100 million.

The park should be left alone for private investments and let the Greenway Group guide the park into the 21st century.

Here's a novel idea! Let's build elevated rail tracks above the high speed traffic lanes and then turn them into a park and shield the pedestrian by constructing a glass wall from the bottom to ground level all up and down the greenway. Wouldn't that be grand!? Followed by fiber optic light installations, outdoor heating systems, and pedestrian bridges. How Zaha Hadid of me. The greenway is going to be so depressing in these coming winter months. I really think this should be versatile for all seasons....Break it up. Build something.

My kids loved playing in the water during the summer. Don't understand what all the griping is about.

15 billion + change = taxpayers
"we should have a spacestation included with that tab"

I'm glad your children had fun playing in the water.

That's how they did it in Tokyo. The Bullet Train runs on the roof.

Trees will grow. Buildings will be erected. Things will change. It takes time.

Mistakes were made, plenty. (75% of new land to be park?? Huh??) But I prefer the RKG to what was there before. Doesn't everyone? (And to gripe about the money is to cry over spilt milk. Every major building enterprise has cost overruns and schedule issues. How could we expect anything else. I mean, really.)

Think of it as a large waiting canvas. Imagine the possibilities, even after all the missteps. Surely, those of us who spend time on sites like this can enjoy pondering the "what-if?"

All we have to do is decide what paint we hope to put on this canvas and find the money to pay for it. These days, no small things.

75% for open space, and that includes places like the Boston Museum and New Center for Arts and Culture. I'm not sure what % the parks make up.

The park alone cost 15 billion +, that is a disgrace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You missed a number of other items that the $15B+ paid for: the Tip O'Niel Tunnel (THE tunnel), the Ted Williams Tunnel, the Lenny Z Bridge, the Leverett Connector, the South Boston Haul Road, capping/landscaping Spectacle Island, restoring Rumney Marsh, just to name a few...so "exhorbitant" - yes; "a disgrace" - not quite.

The park itself is successful in spite of [or perhaps, because of] its incompleteness...ironically, IMO, the incompleteness is exactly what makes it a success or helps to assure a future success. Call me cynical, but I'm not sure if we strove now to make this 100% complete that "our age" would get this 100% right for such an important piece of the city. The city needs a bit of time to take a breath from the politics and press and expense of the "Big Dig." We need to adjust to the newness of this area and the spaces and opportunities that have been created before we a) judge it as a finished object, and b) out of our impatience, hastily allow ill-conceived art, structures, uses, etc to fill in the voids.

FYI - filling the Back Bay started in the 1850's and really wasn't the treasure we brag about now until the 1890's...40 years to get it right.

There a lot of of other things in this total, new beds or something like that for the North End to stop the vibrations from construction, sound proof windows in Fort Point Channel, contributions to the Holicaust Memorial and choosing a less desirable route to appease Gillette. They wanted to go under the channel.

"The city needs a bit of time to take a breath from the politics and press and expense of the "Big Dig."

Menino is already trying to put height restrictions on the Greenway. It should be called the MeninoWAY. I personally don't appreciate politicians jumping on the bandwagon as contractors have robbed the taxpayers blind on the big dig for the last 10 years. Then they try to tell you what can and can't be done on the greenway which was paid in full by the taxpayers.

I agree we need guidance from the Greenway committee but to have politicians put restricitions and have no accountability and understanding on how to better this city is a slap in the face.

I strongly appose the politicians in this city because I believe they are mostly snakes and have kept the city back from being the FIRST RATE city it should be.

I could be wrong.

And the politicians are doing an awful job representing the taxpayers the last couple years. Just look at the Stock Market and amounts of DEBT that this nation has occured. (10 Trillion ready to pass 11 Trillion)

Tough times ahead

The Mayor is the least of Boston problems. Gangs, Crime, Drugs, are running rampant.
Boston is the beacon of education around the world. But for own public school systems are a real disaster.
Whatever happen to EDUCATION because we have failed in this country to better are youth.

We do need change and it's coming.

I think you meant to type 'our' children.

Yes, change is coming, hopefully not in the form of a headlong plunge in socialism.

We are in Socialism. Just take a look how the Federal Reserve inflates and deflates our dollar. The poor chump who saves every dime just got screwed.

Why bailout the banks 800 billion of taxpayers money. The banks made bad bets. You consider that Capitalism?????

Capitalism is one person's loss is another person's gain.
Real estate, Banks, all should be in FIRESALE mode to the higher bidder.
Like I said before too much Government intervention.

Don't worry guys. This sort of thing happens every 15 or 20 years. In chaos there is opportunity. Enjoy it.

Looks to me the politicians are squealing like the pigs.

Boston politicians are just cess pool of crap

Are we a bit off topic here?? If there are no new observations about the RCG, let's just put the topic to sleep for a while until there are.....

Back on topic: I just took a walk along the Greenway, and I can report that the fall color is just about peak and some of the flowers are still in bloom.

If you're nearby this weekend, it's going to be a great time to check out the colors, especially in the "green" parcels between Rowes Wharf and South Station.
