SBWTC /South Boston Waterfront Transportation Center | Seaport

He contradicts his first sentence. He should have said Im surprised some of you are not protesting this project.

Jim Aloisi, who loves public transit, makes a good case for adding the garage. I was totally anti-garage but after reading his op-ed, understand it now.

https://commonwealthmagazine.org/transportation/new-seaport-garage-makes-sense/

Massport’s garage, designed to keep traffic off local streets and offer more sustainable modal choices, is probably the best approach to a parking facility that could be hoped for in the Seaport District, certainly more than any private sector builder would offer. The location of the garage and the recently announced Omni Hotel complex have been designated for development since the days the Big Dig was planned and designed, so having more density and vibrant uses on this site is neither unanticipated nor unwelcome.

More to the point, the garage, in large part, will provide replacement parking for spaces that are or will soon be eliminated as a result of other development in the Seaport District, or for development that has been anticipated for some time. The actual net new number of parking spaces in the 1,550-space garage is about 300. While many people, myself included, would prefer less parking, the reality is that this new garage will not be as negatively impactful as some people worried it might be.

Not to mention its located right after the exit so these people will come out of the tunnel and can immediately turn into the garage and park instead of wandering around looking for spaces. The location makes sense.

Interesting article though I have never heard of the State Police blocking the Silver Line from using an on ramp into the Ted Tunnel. Is this ramp for emergency vehicles only? Or only to be used in case of a massive emergency, say, at Logan?

Currently any emergency vehicle can use it. It was designed for the Silver Line and the State Police decided to claim it for themselves.

Jim's decade-long mission now has been to get them to let the SL use it again and eliminate the ridiculous loop-de-loop in the Seaport.

there is a ramp near the E4 state police station.
The silver line has to travel an extra mile circling around on the Haul Rd to enter the tunnel since they are not allowed to use this ramp.
The police ramp would also put the silver line at the head/beyond the traffic that occurs heading into the tunnel due to the merges of 90EB/93NB/Seaport local on ramp/93NB HOV ramp.

Sounds like an easy fix! Why is it so difficult for the State Police to not see? Hard to believe that the T and the Mayor can't pressure the governor to change this rule. Crazy!

These images might not make any sense, so I urge all of you to check out a Google map for details. The first image shows is the route the SL 1 takes once it comes above ground at D Street until it goes into the Ted Williams Tunnel.

The second image is a close-up of the ::existing:: exit / entrance from Mass Haul Road into the Ted Williams Tunnel.

If the SL 1 buses were able to simply get into the tunnel by taking that exit, they would save the time of going down Mass Haul Road (sitting in traffic), circling around where the exhaust pipes are (near Sausage parcel) then into the tunnel and .. back into the same direction.

I thought the time saved would be 7-20 minutes (srsly) but timing it a couple times it was more like 3-10 minutes (during rush hour). Not a huge savings but why should there be any delay, right?

::We:: recently sent an email to the MassDOT spokesperson to ask for comment but haven't heard anything back.

This is messy b/c it's MassPort land (I think) but MassDOT, the city, the state, and NAM .. and everyone else is involved.

For some reason the State Police want sole access to that ramp.

But there is huge irony in the images. Did anyone else notice that on Google Maps, the ramp is called Silver Line Way!

I asume the State Police's concern is that a stalled or broken down bus would block police use of the ramp. If that's the case, then simply widen the ramp to two full lanes. There is plenty of room. Only thing needed would be a new retaining wall and pavement.

Imagine if track 51 had gained sole rights to that tunnell and subway cars were used on the line going from the back bay to chelsea. I cant remember where the tunnel is too narrow for trains if that is for the silver line tunnel or the mixed use. If its for the tunnel with the ted running a subway line to chelsea would have been badass.

Am I not the only who read this post like a Trump tweet? :)

Here's the added portion of the trip due to the ban, with the traffic as bad as I can set it on Google. It adds 0.7 miles and up to 12 minutes!

Removing that delay, and bypassing traffic would go a long way to improving user confidence in those trying to catch their flights.

Eh. The detour is indeed silly and eats up some time, but the flight-missing traffic doesn't really happen on those backroads. It happens in the tunnel itself, which is fundamentally flawed by not having dedicated lanes for HOV/transit.

Ah yes, a classic Masshole tale of power-abusing staties and the pols too chickenshit to stand up to them.
