Somerville Infill and Small Developments

Here’s to hope…

All the Spring Hill and subsequent sewer separation projects in Somerville are dependent upon the Poplar St pump station to evacuate the water, so it’s nice to see it moving forward.

At the Greek Orthodox Church in Spring Hill. Curious choice to use CMUs for this wall, no? Especially since the arched windows aren’t really aches - I think there’s curved steel inserts holding the opening up. Also seems like they’re keeping some of the old framing/structural members up, while building the new infill. But, points for consistency - they like their arched windows!

Just about all wrapped and windows and sliding doors installed. I wonder if all those glass doors will have functional balconies or more of the French balcony. Either way, will be good for natural light in the apartments.

How so? What do you like about it?
Well, I like the materials, the symmetry, the shape.
I think it's not trying too hard and is still interesting.
Although I don't know if there's going to be retail, I like the street level interaction, sometimes lab space can be aloof and uninviting (like the first Boynton yards building) but this seems different.
I think it provides a good bookend for the industrial area behind it over the line in Charlestown.

As for what US2 should be doing,
I walk past the prospect st site every day and love watching it go up. It's a remarkable development in my book.
I just don't see anything that ties it to what was there before. Maybe there's some blurb in the planning about the color palette or some such but I don't instantly see it.
I'm not suggesting building a building shaped like a radiator but a nod to what came before on the site would be nice.
I presume Brickbottom is so called because they used to make brick there. Seems like an obvious material for the area.
Just watch, They'll take down the 'Rickies' building and replace it with something that shows no trace of what was there before.

Ooooh, CLT construction is finally making its way into Somerville. I'm hoping that we'll see more projects with it in the coming years. I feel like CLT buildings are kinda like that tired joke about vegans: they always have some feature that shouts "HEY, LOOK AT ME, I'M PART WOOD!"

"I presume Brickbottom is so called because they used to make brick there."

Yep, but that's going way way back. Supposedly the clay in that part of town made good bricks. The old industrial buildings that got abandoned and then saved by the artist's collective are more recent - a cannery, a bakery, etc.

Good points all around - thx for sharing. I chuckled at the thought of a radiator inspired building. I know it wouldn’t be the same, but it would be amazing if Ricky’s would have a storefront in one of the new buildings after his lot gets developed - which I believe is slated for a hotel.

Finally some action again on SomerNova’s ‘tough tech’ project at 599 Somerville Ave after a month or more of nothing happening. Looks like the back retaining wall requires some special attention as it abuts a few houses there.

Looks like Khalsa still has some savvy - on McGrath. Not bad at all. Especially big upgrade from what’s there. Rental apartments. But it’s pretty lame that they don’t have retail on ground floor. Not even steps up to the ground floor units. So you’ll have someone’s front door right off a busy urban center and what will become a sidewalk of a busy pedestrian walkway - when McGrath becomes a boulevard in the near future. https://www.somervillema.gov/sites/default/files/394 McGrath Highway_3.2.22_reduced.pdf

Finally someone is rebooting the old Tap and Trotter space. At Kirkland and Beacon. Looks interesting!
