The Hub on Causeway (née TD Garden Towers) | 80 Causeway Street | West End

This project may have its (many) worts, but I actually really dig this section's multistory windows' homage to the old Boston Garden:

Lipofsky-Boston-Garden.jpg

It's a nice homage. But, all this expense and new work when they really should have just repurposed the old Garden from the beginning. The Montreal Forum still stands as an office and entertainment complex, and Maple Leaf Gardens now serves as a supermarket at street level and Ryerson University's athletic center above. They could have gutted the old place, expanded the Commuter Rail lobby out underneath it, and put the B's practice facility in it. Instead, we got 20 years of a parking lot and now a couple of mediocre towers.

They had a hard time keeping the dump lit. Had to forfeit home games in the Stanley Cup finals in '88.... Then it happened again a few years later. Add lousy, low-capacity, obstructed seating, inadequate lockers/club houses, not enough luxury boxes, and as near as makes no difference, nil AC.... i'm sure i left out a few. The wrecking ball came not a moment to soon.

i worked in that neighborhood in the '80s. It was gritty, seedy and barren. l prefer the current version, complete w/ no porno or mental defectives hanging about, and somewhat generic, sterile buildings.

The podium alone that the new towers will sit on more than makes up for the bulldozing of the old garden which was a complete dump! That, along with the tearing down of the El, and the Big Dig opening up new land to build on (along with having the Zakim for a new neighbor) has transformed this area from a dark dingy mess to a beautiful new part of the city!

If the Garden had closed 2 years ago, I would have said keep the facade. As it is, I'd rather the homage in this podium than either leaving the husk up for 20 years or settling for the PoMo that was going to be built in the 90s...

Were here now and its great. This area is a million times better than it ever was. Also the bulldozing for the elevated highway ended up being a good thing because the greenway is a jewel.

The Hub on Causeway is being constructed in three phases. Completion of Phase I, which includes TD Garden’s grand entrance, new entry for North Station and additional commuter conveniences, is set for October 2018. The retail, office space and amenities located within The Hub are planned to open in late 2019. Phase II, which includes the hotel and residential spaces, will be completed in late 2019. Verizon’s commitment to the project kicks off the final phase, featuring a 31-story office tower, the tallest in Boston in more than two decades, which will be completed in mid-2021.

New entrance to the Garden will be open for this coming Celtics/Bruins season.

In addition to the recent leasing milestone at the project, Boston’s first citizenM hotel topped off its structure at The Hub on Causeway earlier this month. This 269-room hotel will be located in an eight-story tower atop the west podium and is planned to open in fall 2019.

The link has a great "At-a-Glance" bulleted summary of what opens when.

The 31 story office tower being the tallest in 20 years line really hit me... Willing to bet its because of the seaport, with that coming close to full build out maybe we will see taller projects in the downtown area again soon.

what about 33 Arch? 33 stories and completed in 2004.

Yes it's an office tower, but this thing is 33 feet taller than 33 Arch,

making it the tallest office tower since 111 Huntington.

*buildings featuring more tall office floors has been more common with NYC, Chicago and SF office construction in recent years.

The waterfront area yea but the seaport has room for literally like 45 more buildings.

Its crazy cuz this will be the tallest in a while, but then Govt ctr comes and is huge, then 115 winthrop which is even taller and one of the tallest buildings in the city, then hopefully SST.

Oh and normally once theyve decided on a design it will still get VE’d a few more times. Im praayyyying this does until its back to just that black glass box. I actually like those midtown ny style towers and we dont have 1. We dont even have 1 glass box tower downtown. Black glass looks amazing too and we dont have an example of an all glass black facade here. Either way I hope this gets VE’d until the stupid design elements go away and it looks normal because this isnt. Even better would be a full redesign and high quality tower, anything but this would be okay tho.

Yes! An Onyx colored/Seagram-like curtain walled skyscraper would be fantastic!

1 Post Office Square are you listening???

posted just recently on Sky City i just found it by accident moments ago clicking on a right Flickr arrow.

If you check out Gensler's (office tower architect) website, they are still showing the previous design (with the spire/antenna) It seems odd they wouldn't have updated to the new iteration of the tower on their website seeing as it's totally different than the one they had. Maybe it just slipped by someone there. (sorry, couldn't figure out how to post a link to it)
