The New Retail Thread

I swear that storefront is cursed.

People said the same about where Five Horses is now (the original in Davis). There were a string of losers in that space until suddenly someone got it right.

Fingers crossed.

Not entirely sure if these belong in this thread...

In a statement released today, Google said: "Google Barge ... A floating data center? A wild party boat? A barge housing the last remaining dinosaur? Sadly, none of the above. Although it's still early days and things may change, we're exploring using the barge as an interactive space where people can learn about new technology."

The ground floor renovation of that "darth vader" building on Boylston is very much welcome. I don't think you can go wrong here as anything is going to be an improvement over the existing condition.

That's a pretty big "Fuck you" to fly-over states from Google.

Not necessarily -- couldn't this get into the Saint Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes?

The Google Barge, owned by the By and Large, LLC.

Floating exhibition space. Based on an article on the West Coast barge, it will travel from port to port, staying at a location for a month or more, before moving on. So perhaps its visits to Boston will coincide with big tech fairs / conventions.

I'm not convinced that Google really knows what will happen with the barges -- they may have been trial balloons within Google - -they may just disappear into obscurity -- or they may proliferate with one for every few Big Cities on the 3 coasts + Great Lakes

Was this whole thing just a bullshit marketing ploy? How could no one know what they were - isn't there such as thing as permits, etc.?

John -- Yea -- they tried to hide it but the Coast Guard wanted to know what it was that's when the East Coaster was towed from New London Ct to Portland Me and given some interim temporary permit

Especially in the Post 9/11 world -- there are few ships, barges, etc. in navigable waters without a lot of permits -- and the bigger things get the more permits

Oh no Wyoming can't get the Google Barge!

Joe -- Didn't Lewis and Clarke get into Wyoming -- if they did then there's a direct connection from the Gulf -- might need to do some portaging over the rapids

After further research it looks as if they didn't get to Wyoming

However, the Yellowstone River is a major Tributary of the Missouri and while far from easy to navigate it is connected -- also while far from any major metropoli in Wyoming such as they are -- it flows for probably over 100 miles within Wyoming

Exactly. The only cities that matter in the US are on the East and West coasts (especially the tech ones that matter).

(Silicon Valley being the only exception)

Data -- How is SV not on the West Coast -- last time I checked it was on SF Bay

Actually I say the only Tech Center that is hard to reach for the barge is Austin TX

It is a bit away from the Gulf although it is on the Colorado River [Texas version of the river] and so in principle the barge could end up on the Colorado River just East of Longhorn Dam -- with some winching or lifting over the not so very high dam [11m] -- the barge could be moored on Town Lake -- just down Congress Ave. -- south of the State Capital

^ You're absolutely correct. That post originally was worded differently and I cut stuff out/moved it around before I posted it. The end result made no sense. I stand corrected that Silicon Valley is indeed on the Coast.

The barge is probably too high to make it under a lot of bridges (which don't have moveable spans) on the inland waterways.

Perhaps not to you but Houston, Dallas and Chicago all have sustantially larger economies than Boston and San Francisco.

Boston is consistently ranked as having a larger world economic impact than Houston or Dallas -- what are you talking about.
