Looks like Honest Amos Hostetter just got busted for working the refs in secret...

They should nail this guy for TAX FRAUD. These non-profit organizations funded by these billionaires are nothing more than tax shelters.
This guy is buying politicans with non-profit funds to support his personal agenda.

These people don't even realize they are committing fraud against the public anymore.
"The 80-year-old billionaire also said there was no connection between his efforts to block the hotel and the $2 million in undisclosed donations he made in the several months afterward toward a ballot initiative in which Governor Charlie Baker was heavily invested."

Now you know why Harbor Garage is not developed this guy is paying all the political hacks off with non-profit funds so they won't make this area better for the public.
Please enlighten me on how this guy avoids paying his taxes that should be paid to the overall public but using his non-profit funds to support his private agenda?
Buying and Selling Politicians with a non-profit company that doesn't pay taxes to the public. No worries he's blocking access to his Nantucket Beach from the public.

This guy is a piece of work. NO RULES APPLY TO THIS GUY.
He's a billionaire, he is a better and smarter person then all of us. He doesn't have to pay taxes right?

Glad to see some exposure on this. I'm also curious if what some of the commentators are saying is true, which is he's suing to block access to the beach by his house on Nantucket while at the same time claiming he's all about public access to the Boston waterfront.

Re: Whiskey Priest/Atlantic Beer Garden Redevelopment | 150 Seaport Blvd | Seaport

It's funny how one of the richest people in the state doesn't have to pay taxes.
And the dumb sheep are okay with this as they pay almost 40% to the Govt and have no clue about regulations or trying to stop anything.

Maybe the IRS will finally take a look at this hypocrite

It's called having a good financial planner (tax-minded) and accountant.

..not understanding this..what is his real motive in preventing dense development of the waterfront?

I really don't believe Amos, Barr Foundation or CLF even make sense on protesting/attacking the Whiskey Priest/Atlantic Beer Garden Redevelopment especially with the entire Seaport built up. Now they are complaining about open space to the public? REALLY

I believe CLF and Amos main goal was to attack the Harbor Garage development from actually going up but CLF, Barr Foundation need some history in protesting other developments so this one just happen to be on the radar.

It's ashame that Amos has cost the overall public the Harbor Garage development which would completely change the landscape of the Greenway in the area.
Harbor Garage development would be open to all the public everybody black, white, green, blue, red. Located right on the MBTA, the Aquarium and enjoy the Greenway.
This would have been epic for the Greenway and the Public. Instead we have an above parking garage which is money making machine that adds no value for the public in this specific area that blocks 90% of the ocean from the park.

Amos should be ashamed of himself using non-profit money to fight a developer over an above garage that blocks 90% of all public access to the area already. Then having spent at least 10Million dollars of non-profit money buying politicans, starting these groups that are paid weekly paychecks to protest developments. So these employees act like antidevelopment activists.

These billionaires with these non-profit companies are scam and are mostly started to avoid paying taxes then they use the money to influence govt regulations to continue to monopolize what is best for their situation and agenda to our Govt which is running a 600Billion dollar deficit.

Its time for TERM LIMITS,
Get money out of politics.
No more lifetime Pensions or healthcare
Balanced budgets
New IRS rules that only taxes on consumption based on goods and services only.
No more Non-profit billionaires clubs that pay no taxes.

Yeah.

But why does he want to prevent the proposed Harbor Garage project from actually going forward?

He says (more or less) that its because he personally likes the waterfront (more or less) like it is now, and thinks that its better for the public that way too.

Do you believe that?

... Or is there another reason that he wants to prevent the proposed Harbor Garage from actually going forward?

... Or does he just want to make it difficult for the proposed Harbor Garage project to go forward, so that he can get leverage on politicians and other power players that he can use for other issues that he is interested in / might benefit from?

Just trying to understand the thesis here.

He's an 80 year old billionaire that works and lives in the area. If you had 1.3 Billion dollars in a non-profit company. Would you want to deal with Construction for 10 years on what is left of your lifespan living & working in the area?

That's my guess. The problem is what he is doing is illegal.

Can you honestly say the public is better off with the garage than the developer's proposal?

Re: Whiskey Priest/Atlantic Beer Garden Redevelopment | 150 Seaport Blvd | Seaport

I think CSTH's thesis is more on target here. The guy probably believes he's doing what's best for the city. We have a real problem these days assuming that someone who feels differently from ourselves is necessarily evil. It's possible for them to be ignorant, misguided, or confused. It's also possible that someone you disagree with is a mix of virtue and self-interest.

Personally, I think the opposition is wrong with these projects, but I don't assume that they're sinister actors, at least not entirely or even mostly.

Maybe your right. But I don't see the developers here paying off politicans I see a non-profit company spending almost 10 million dollars that we know about fighting off economic progress that benefits the overall public.

That is illegal my friend no matter if Amos believes its right or wrong.

This group should get a visit by the IRS and the FBI at this point and pull all emails that have been related back and forth to local and state officials to see if we have some type of history of bribery, fraud, corruption.

Why are these officials flying over to Denmark, Mexico, whereever on Amo's dime? These officials are supposed to represent the taxpayers not a billionaire non-profit company. Almost $6,000 dollar per person for these trips. I went to Asia with a companion and for a month it cost 10K.

Re: Whiskey Priest/Atlantic Beer Garden Redevelopment | 150 Seaport Blvd | Seaport

^ Maybe so.

If that is indeed his motive then .... well it must be nice to have $1.3B

Re: Whiskey Priest/Atlantic Beer Garden Redevelopment | 150 Seaport Blvd | Seaport

about fighting off economic progress that benefits the overall public.

But this is my point - there can be honest disagreements about what is progress and what is public benefit. Again, I disagree in this case with the people/groups in question, but that doesn't make them evil.

I also don't know about illegality here. Unethical or shady I'd probably agree with. There's some behind the scenes influencing going on. Doesn't make it a federal case.

Does it make it EVIL? Not to me---- Its a doggy dog world----but If I'm the developer who purchased one of these developments along with paying my taxes with the right intention to develop for the good of the public and make money for my company along with my employees. Then came along this billionaire and his non-profit company which doesn't pay any taxes with hired employees to protest my specific development. In which the public really never had a say.
You could consider that pretty screwed up. State and local officials need to pony up the truth here.

Just because this guy is a billionaire and using non-profit money to buy into politics is F*cked up. George Soros wannabe.

Re: Whiskey Priest/Atlantic Beer Garden Redevelopment | 150 Seaport Blvd | Seaport

Doggy dog? Woof.

Re: Whiskey Priest/Atlantic Beer Garden Redevelopment | 150 Seaport Blvd | Seaport

Doggy dog? Woof.

If the IRS and the FBI step in. Both developers could have a MEGA lawsuit against the state and the non-profit agency for corruption.

Re: Whiskey Priest/Atlantic Beer Garden Redevelopment | 150 Seaport Blvd | Seaport

I think its ego. Amos envisions himself as the big swinging you know what on the waterfront and he's going to impose his vision. No, I don't think he's Mr. Burns, doing evil for the sake of doing evil, but that doesn't make him any less misguided.

Same thing with CLF, Squirrely Shirley, and all the other NIMBY's. Its about power. Nothing more, nothing less.

Then why doesn't Amos just pony up the money to buy the developments himself and donate the sites or build his own vision of the area?

Instead Amos is paying off our state officials to drag things out or using favors to get his agenda across? That's more than just an ego in my opinion.
I don't believe Shirely would ever do this. She is very angry concerning that the developments use taxpayers incentives.

To buy up the waterfront from the North End to the Seaport might cost a few more bucks than even Amos has at his disposal. Plus, once he croaks no guarantee his heirs don't sell to the highest bidder. More bang for his buck to fund litigious NIMBY groups like the CLF to do his bidding for them and set a precedent of no development without running a gauntlet of lawyers. That's the gift that keeps on giving, long after he's pushing up the daisies.
