Re: new hotel proposed- 275 Albany St

That shit on the low rise roof looks left over from the Gropius and Glaeser design of the Prudential ("Back Bay") Center.

Well, the rendering isn't really detailed enough for me to have a real opinion either way, but I like what appears to be its homage to mid-century design. That might change once a more detailed, colored rendering.

Re: new hotel proposed- 275 Albany St

I wasn't a huge fan of the original, but this new iteration looks like a value engineered piece of shit. So much for the Albany St. Corridor?

This city doesn't even pretend to have the slightest semblance of design standards for new development anymore. Reeks of desperation.

You should go to the public meeting and voice your concern. It may not be too late to get a better building.

At least the windows are lined up...

The vast majority of new development the world over is fairly plain. You don't see every new midrise apartment building even in design-conscious cities like Copenhagen or Rotterdam making Dezeen, especially when they're in out of the way locations like this. We should just be happy it's just boring and not unbearably ugly.

I see that too, except that it just reminds me of a poor man's Standard Hotel, which stradles the High Line in Manhattan's Meatpacking District.

^^^^^^^^^^

That hotel is absolutely amazing!! How is it that NYC can get buildings like this but in Boston, I'd bet something like this would get absolutely shot down in a moment's notice, especially if the proposal was to straddle the Greenway or some other public park!

Re: new hotel proposed- 275 Albany St

We get the one. Believe me for ever Standard there are 100 glass turds. NYC just has more space to hide. Boston doesn't have that luxury.

Re: new hotel proposed- 275 Albany St

^^ Indeed, Van. All the more reason for people to demand better.

Re: new hotel proposed- 275 Albany St

I agree the bank of america building in times square os a complete POS. Almost nothing redeeming about it at all although I appreciate the spire which appears to me to be an ode to empire state and chrysler but its not enough. I 'm glad its not dominating Bostons skyline.

Re: new hotel proposed- 275 Albany St

The Standard is a staggering work of architecture, which, combined with it's unique siting, is all the more memorable. Any imitation attempted by this proposal is indeed poor, but Boston shouldn't be trying to imitate New York in its buildings (or any sort of cultural institution), or outdo, or compare, or whatever. We don't need another New York, but it would be nice if Boston would at least be bold in forging its own physical or spatial identity. Just because we can't tuck the disasters in rarely-travelled alleys (though New York certainly has plenty of horrible buildings right out in the open) doesn't mean that all risk taking should be discouraged here. As of now we're just heading for a background of bland, placeless architecture. Maybe that is Boston's architectural identity, and maybe that's okay. I don't know.

Balazs appears to be a brilliant guy. He's like the Steve Jobs of resort properties. I've had the good fortune to stay in the Hollywood, Miami and NYC hotels -- pricy, but it's worth my dime.

Indeed.

The most egregious example is the urban atrocity currently in progress in the Bulfinch Triangle. I find it troubling that the district that takes its very name from Boston's greatest architect being rebuilt as a fleet of dull, craftless landscrapers.

Re: new hotel proposed- 275 Albany St

The Standard - meh. The sculptural form of the base is something, but it supports the equivalent of a Czech Plattenbau. If it wasn't such a hotspot for exhibitionism people would probably want it torn down already; as it is, just wait 30 years.
