Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Whatever its origin, I think "Let Boston Rise" is the best YIMBY slogan I've heard. It's simple and to the point, makes sense, and doesn't sound awkward or forced. It associates people "rising" and cities "rising" -- which are universally considered good things -- with buildings "rising". And the "let" implies that Boston would "rise" more if only it weren't being held back.

So yeah, "Let Boston Rise"!

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

There is no concept of a NIMBY at play here, because this in the heart of the Financial District.

I disagree because I think there are several folks who consider the garden/common their back yard, and consider this project to be affecting that (again, as said earlier, not because this particular tower has that big of an impact, but because they see it as setting off a potential encroachment trend).

Millenium's tactic of stacking the audience with ringers is the same that community organizers use at other types of meetings. These meetings never reflect a true cross-section of stakeholders. I'd be a fan of a hybrid arrangement, where the event begins with a meet & greet / open house, but ends with everyone filing into chairs set-up for a Q&A. Such a format might result in not having to have the follow-up meeting.

EDIT: and yes, I love the "let boston rise" slogan too. It has a "this city is all of ours" ring to it.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

^^well,

You just described the last 2 meetings.

Larkin was taking a lot of heat for everything from Transbay to the JFK assassination.

This was a clever break from that.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Well I'm sold. Now using the #LetBostonRise hashtag on my FB-posts concerning Boston development. Hopefully it catches on; this is long overdue!

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

I have long eschewed the whole pound sign (sigh hashtag) epidemic, but might have to change my tune finally.
Still hate Twitter with the same vigour as always.
oh yeah..... #letbostonrise

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

See post #2622. Just typical drivel from Kyle Clauss.

Sorry for the re-post; cool that a few of us just left some comments.

In any case, it's true that it's tough to find a platform for those who support a project, rather than oppose it. Everyone accuses some sort of conflict of interest, even if you're just an independent-minded supporter of it.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

^^Parcel 15 should go 700'....

that way we can give the skyline a 700' buzzcut for all the BIG TOWERS in the future.

btw, Lord and Taylor will never rise above 415'

shadows over Comm Ave, Copley Square, etc.

yes, we're wretched.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

iAm thinkin you MAKE MY POINT!!!! BIG CREEPY HAIRCUTS AND FUNNY BOOTS

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

This project is a major opportunity for the city to develop a crumbling old garage and make a $150M in the process. Not to mention as a someone who works across the street I am excited for the great hall and retail. I just don't see the argument against this bc of shadows. The law is without merit.

I recommend a Boston history book for all of you.

Which history, John, the one from the cradle of liberty, showing progress, development, great architecture, lots of construction...or the one from the past 40 years...showing that it takes an average of 10 years for a development of any substance to progress from concept to reality, if it gets built at all?

It takes an unacceptable amount of time for completely reasonable developments to manifest in this "international" city.

And this is coming from someone who is adamant about preserving Boston's history.

I agree, the best parts of Boston history were the times when the government hardly intervened at all in housing policy! Since Boston's worst decisions were blatantly caused by greater government involvement in the real estate process, it seems an obvious course of action presents itself (not that anyone in South Boston apparently agrees!)

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

I can't tell if you're serious or being sarcastic. Yes, I said - 30 - but in response to your response, Boston's government (with the state) was responsible for the Back Bay!, hardly a worst decision.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

It just occurred to me that Globe scribe Tim Logan's mistake at the start of his Winthrop Sq. tower proposal story is one of the most unintentionally humorous errors a journalist could make, considering the context specifics:

"In the latest flareup over Millennium Partners’ plan to build a skyscraper atop downtown Boston’s Winthrop Square Garage"

http://www.bostonglobe.com/business/2017/01/06/the-latest-winthrop-square-fight-how-talk-about-winthrop-square/QkjuNl1dc95y3FZ5F2PE6I/story.html#comments

That's right: he actually wrote, "atop".

Which immediately conjures up a whimsical/mythical strategy session at MPartners: "how do we get the NIMBYs off our backs? By golly, we'll preserve the spectacular[ly blighted and dilapidated] urban renewal-era garage and use it as a delightful podium for our honkin' massive tower, to demonstrate our sincere commitment to historical preservation."

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

the globe story was received with considerable apathy. Everyone knows it's going forward. Joe, Martin, Brian, Teresa and the Gang are running out the clock on the nimby. Amen. Ram this through while the rest of them are down in Florida. The people of Boston are (yawning), 'when is the demo? when are the cranes coming?'
