Winthrop Center | 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Great, I was thinking they would end up with that one.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

690' main tower, 579' side piece. File this under "good enough" and let's build the damn thing already!

Also, the 3rd to last page of that PDF has a really great render that I haven't seen before.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

It was better a minute ago.

BISNOW: "Millennium Partners heard design complaints for its proposed Winthrop Square skyscraper, and it responded with a dramatically new design. The developer submitted revised images this week to the Boston Civic Design Commission for its 115 Winthrop Square development. The refreshed design maintains a 690-foot structure, but it now looks from certain vantage points as though there are two distinct towers on the property. Millennium also enhanced what it is billing as the “Great Hall,” now closer in scope to its original scale as opposed to the second design submission some critics felt looked like a regular office lobby...."

Oh well. Bring the __cking gruas and build the thing already.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

I'm glad they lost that gold ornamentation.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Slides 45-46 show that this project will include a narrowing of Franklin St between Arch and Hawley (just to the SW of Millennium Tower), with one current traffic lane giving way to trees and benches. Nice. The intersection at Franklin and Arch is currently WAY wider than it needs to be, especially since Franklin already essentially dead ends at MT.

It still appears that they're planning to rip out all the trees in Winthrop Square. I 100% hate that. It'll take decades for replacement trees to grow to their size.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Because they'll need the square for staging ?

or to replace with a variety of deciduous or coniferous that thrive with less sunlight ??

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

The Franklin St. thing is a dream come true.

Winthrop Sq., on the other hand, doesn't need to be fixed IMHO

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Agreed. A mistake to tinker with it. Why? And the statue?

The Burns statue may be going back to the Fens, its original and rightful home from which it was purloined in the 1970s.

Fenway Civic Association said:
The Robert Burns statue was created by sculptor Henry Hudson O'Reilly and originally situated in proximity to sculptor Daniel Chester French's monument to John Boyle O'Reilly in the Back Bay Fens. The juxtaposition of the two works was a deliberate way to honor Scottish and Irish literary figures in a pastoral setting reminiscent of the locales within the body of their literary works. Further, the Burns statue possesses continued relevance in the Fenway neighborhood, with Peterborough, Kilmarnock and Queensberry streets in the abutting West Fenway named after locations in Burns's works. Given its significance and ties to the neighborhood, it was unfortunate that this statue was removed from the Fenway, without notice or public process, for the benefit of a private developer.

If Winthrop Square were to stay (largely) untouched, the Burns statue should still go back to the Fens and be replaced with a proper Millennium-commissioned John Winthrop statue.

The pedestrian experience leaves something to be desired, but I agree that fixing that doesn't require destroying the plaza/park/trees.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

This tower will continue what the Millennium Tower started - drawing your eyes away from the 60's/70's boxes. That alone makes it a win.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

What is with the Chicago Bean? For scale?

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

What is with the Chicago Bean? For scale?

To show the possibility of hosting an iconic sculpture. They're not saying THE Bean will go there, they are using it to suggest public art if a fountain is not desired (they have high maintenance/upkeep costs).

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

To show the possibility of hosting an iconic sculpture.

If we could somehow reflect the Chicago skyline in Boston, it would be the most iconic sculpture on earth.

Re: 115 Winthrop Square | Financial District

Leroy, is that you?

I'm thinking this project proposal has a far greater than 32.33% [repeating, of course] chance of survival. LET'S DO THIS!!!!
