Apparently a slightly shorter backside won out.

Slides 45-46 show that this project will include a narrowing of Franklin St between Arch and Hawley (just to the SW of Millennium Tower), with one current traffic lane giving way to trees and benches. Nice. The intersection at Franklin and Arch is currently WAY wider than it needs to be, especially since Franklin already essentially dead ends at MT.
It still appears that they're planning to rip out all the trees in Winthrop Square. I 100% hate that. It'll take decades for replacement trees to grow to their size.
Agreed. A mistake to tinker with it. Why? And the statue?
Fenway Civic Association said:The Robert Burns statue was created by sculptor Henry Hudson O'Reilly and originally situated in proximity to sculptor Daniel Chester French's monument to John Boyle O'Reilly in the Back Bay Fens. The juxtaposition of the two works was a deliberate way to honor Scottish and Irish literary figures in a pastoral setting reminiscent of the locales within the body of their literary works. Further, the Burns statue possesses continued relevance in the Fenway neighborhood, with Peterborough, Kilmarnock and Queensberry streets in the abutting West Fenway named after locations in Burns's works. Given its significance and ties to the neighborhood, it was unfortunate that this statue was removed from the Fenway, without notice or public process, for the benefit of a private developer.
The Franklin St. thing is a dream come true.
Winthrop Sq., on the other hand, doesn't need to be fixed IMHO
What is with the Chicago Bean? For scale?
