Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

If there is any shadow on the State House, it is late morning on the shorter days of the year. The sun's shadow, at all azimuths greater than 180 degrees will not hit the State House.

Sorry, my latest comment was regarding the John Hancock Tower. It definitely doesn't cast a shadow eastward toward the State House in the morning.

I think your comment sounds correct if you are referring to the Winthrop Sq tower.

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

fattony, I erred.

When the sun is at an azimuth of 180 degrees, it is due south of the object. Google maps are north oriented, and when I look at the orientation of the Hancock Tower on Clarendon, it is southwest of the the State House. Thus for the sun's shadow to reach the State House, the sun's azimuth would need to be between 180 degrees due South, and 270 degrees due West. In December - January, near sunset, the Hancock shadow, if the azimuth was around 230 degrees, could reach the State House.

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

Anyone have an old render/photo of the park plaza tower that was shot down in the 70s? They keep mentioning it in the article thus the creation of the law.

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

^ was about to ask that. Another thing I caught in the article is they said the tower design is not 100% finalized so they still dont know exactly what the shadow cast will be. Interesting. I wonder how much is going to change-barring the shadows dont bury it outright.

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

PNF is up on BPDA site. "Up to 775 feet tall."
Tough to post links from phone; sorry.

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

How on earth are they going to get it to 775' and change shadow laws? Brass balls....

I will say some of the angles have me liking this tower more and more. Still think it gets sent back to the drawing board for a design that reduces shadows.

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

The design isn't even 100% finalized and if this hits 775' we are going to be gold. This better happen.

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

How much of an impact on the shadows would we see if this was cut down to say 650 feet? While not ideal, it would be better than nothing.

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

^^650~700' sounds about good for the HYM tower that will be proposed next door on the St Anthony's parcel (at some point in the coming months)..... It lies between 111 Fed and the Hanging Gardens, so it can be built tall and not add shadow.

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

^source?

Edit:. Odura did comment about a higher Bulfinch Crossing (another hym project) so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he might have insider information. If only boston02124 knew something.

Just because our national politics have plunged into an irrational abyss doesn't mean you have to spout this nonsense.

St. Anthony's Shrine just had a $500,000 fundraiser:

Do you really think they would've kept such a huge proposal like that under their collective hats (or cassocks) at an event like that? Seriously, idle musings like this are just plain weird and disturbing if you try to pass them off as serious like the way you're doing with this.

Of course, a reality-TV star who's never held any office just got elected President so, I suppose anything can happen. Especially in this profoundly irrational age we now find ourselves living in.

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

Id guess hes basing this off of it was used in their proposal, were in a boom, columbus center even came back....but I see 0 signs pointing to this happening from anywhere. If it does Ill be the first to say I was wrong. And damn do I hope I am.

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

They should put some type of a tall tower there in honor of a great legend who ran the city for over 4 consecutive terms (20 years)!

As much as it's easy to criticize King Menino over a mediocre record of housing, and a lack of scale over his 20 year reign, He would not have hesitated to use his immense power to ram this project through in these late stages. He'd be telling the Friends of the Garden, people of Boston and Globe staff, to "BACK the FUCK OFF.... I GOT THS."

Re: 111 Federal St. | Formerly Trans National Place (Winthrop Square) Part 2

I remember a project at the corner of Arlington and Boylston, proposed by a developer and good friend / supporter of the mayor, that was stopped by shadows.

That's why i argued bitterly with CityLover up on Skyscraper City last fall, that we're really close to the end on >200m, >180m, >150m, and >120m.... We can push zoning just so far, for a few 110~120m, but we're not going to be building much taller until we tell the good people of Mission Hill, 'we're coming with the dozers and excavators and building 120m Vancouver neighborhood supertalls.'

No we aren't out of space and yes there are other threads that were made to go over this.

You know, we tried something like that in the 60s. People kinda hated it; I don't think we need to try again.

Surface parking lot next to North Station (north next to the old spaudling hospital). Lower Alston once the I-90 realignment is complete. One Constitution Center in Charlestown. I-90 air rights. Southwest Corridor air rights. Every single parking lot in Downtown/back bay/Kendall/Seaport when self driving cars become mainstream. Inner Belt Somerville. Gas Stations in Fenway. Widdet Circle

Hell get good transit out to Lynn/Waltham/Watertown and start building tall there.

Every single big box store parking lot once self driving cars become mainstream.

Many non historical low rises could be torn down and replaced by something taller.

The possibilities are endless.

Mods please move this discussion to the correct forum.
