Boston Landing | New Balance Complex | Brighton

Re: New Brighton Landing | New Balance Complex

When they say it's supposed to "resemble a shoe"...is the tower supposed to be the sock?

Picture if you will, a college kid, in his flimsly basketball shorts, lying on his back, on the grass, on a beautiful day....resting his head on the lap of his hot significant other....who's knowingly running a finger gently, and slowly, down the college boy's chest.... That's how I see the sneaker and 'tower!' :)

I like the renderings...and congrats to New Balance, the second Boston corporation headquartered here, to expand and invest in the city!

Atlantad --the other would be ?

how about some of these:

Partners
MFA
Northeastern U
Boston U
Legal Seafoods
Vertex Pharmaceuticals
Wentwoth Institute of Technology

As far as I can say all the above are corporations and all are headquatered in Boston and all have recently expanded

Re: New Brighton Landing | New Balance Complex

Liberty Mutual!
I just find it refreshing that, for a change, a nationally known Boston corporation is expanding in the city and not moving out of town...or being bought out! I don't consider universities and colleges to be for-profit corporations! I should have made myself more clear on that point! I've said many times in this forum, Boston is so damn lucky to have the 8 major research institutions plus so many other institutions of higher learning in the city and immediate metro area!

Re: New Brighton Landing | New Balance Complex

By 'corporation' I'm sure s/he meant 'for-profit corporation', which excludes most of your list.

Atlantad -- what about Legal Seafoods -- clearly its Nationally known as the chowder has been served at the White House for big time dinners?

What about Vertex Pharma -- expanding, moving to Boston from Cambridge, certainly nationally known because of all the PR "largest private sector construction project underway", etc.

There are quite a few companies that could have made the list.

I picked mostly the not-for profits -- because outside of their status with the IRS they are corporations with well paid employees, physical plant, customers, advertising -- just about what any for profit corporation has and has to do

As for buying and selling in/out -- there are Boston (Greater Boston generally) companies buying others outside of the area. There are outside companies, both US and other who have seen value and are buying into Boston area. I don't find either to be exceptional -- it's just business

Recently for example the following M&A involved local companies (courtesy of Boston Globe)
http://www.boston.com/business/gallery/massachusettsmergers?pg=16

1) Amazon bought Kiva Systems (Reading) to get involved in robotics for fulfillment

2) PerkinElmer Inc. (Waltham) bought:
a) Caliper Life Sciences Inc. (Hopkinton). Caliper sells a suite of molecular imaging and detection technologies that complement PerkinElmer’s products and services.
b) P&E made seven smaller acquisitions this year as the global life sciences sector consolidates -- including Labtronics Inc., a Canadian company that provides electronic laboratory notebook services in order to extend its data integration software offerings to its laboratory customers

3) P&E's Waltham neighbor Thermo-Fisher bought:
a) Phadia, a Swedish firm for $3.5 billion in cash -- specializes in allergy and autoimmunity diagnostics
b) Sterilin Ltd. a British company that provides single-use plastic products.
c) Dionex, a California manufacturer of chromatography systems. The $2.1 billion price represented a 21 percent premium to Dionex's stock price.
d) Ahura Scientific, a Wilmington-based scientific toolmaker in a move to boost its analytical equipment operations.

4) Verizon Acquired: Burlington-based CloudSwitch, a three-year-old company that helps its customers run existing enterprise applications using cloud-based services, with high levels of security

5) Northeast Utilities (NU) of Hartford Ct. is acquiring (essentially a merger of equals) Boston-bases NSTAR -- the surviving company will be NU with NSTAR's Tom May as the boss of one of the nation’s largest utility companies.

6) Skyworks Solutions (Woburn), a leading semiconductor supplier for wireless communications bought:
a) SiGe Semiconductor (Andover), a leading global supplier of RF front-end solutions for wireless multimedia across a wide range of applications. The acquisition complements Skyworks' leadership in wide area front-end solutions by adding SiGe's innovative short range, silicon-based products
b) fellow chip maker Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc (Santa Clara, Calif) in a cash-and-stock deal worth about $262.5 million.

7) Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates Inc. (Gloucester) Acquired by: Applied Materials Inc. (San Jose) Price: $4.9 billion -- Applied Materials Inc., the world’s largest maker of semiconductor fabrication equipment. Varian will continue to exist in Gloucester after the deal is completed but Applied Materials will consolidate offices outside of Massachusetts.

8) Watts Water Technologies Inc.(North Andover) manufactures products to control the efficiency, safety, and quality of water acquires Danfoss Socla S.A.S., a European company, for approximately $175.7 million.

9) Where Inc. (Boston) specializes in location media technology along with an application that gives people personalized deals and recommendations -- Acquired by: PayPal, a division of eBay Inc., PayPal plans to integrate its software into the Where mobile app. It is also expected that Where will be adding more employees to its Boston office.

10) ITA Software Inc. travel software Acquired by: Google Inc -- US Justice Department requiring Google to keep licensing ITA's software and to set up firewalls that would prevent the company from obtaining information collected by ITA's customers.

11) EMC Corp.(Hopkinton) data storage bought:
a) NetWitness Corp. a Virginia company that provides network security analysis solutions. NetWitness will now operate as part of RSA, EMC's security division, but will not have any effect on revenue or earnings for the company.
b) made a big bet on "big data" by agreeing to make a $2.25 billion cash purchase of Isilon Systems Inc., a Seattle firm that builds relatively low-cost systems for storing immense amounts of information.

12) BioVex Group Inc. (Woburn) cancer vaccine maker Acquired by: Amgen the world's largest biotechnology company, which runs a 1,000-person drug manufacturing site in West Greenwich, R.I., and Cambridge drug discover lab.

13) Genzyme Corp. (Cambridge and Boston) Acquired by: French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis SA for $20 billion, pricing the company's shares at $74 each

14) Novell (Waltham & Utah) Acquired by Seatlle-based Attachmate Corp. for $2.2 billion, including $450 million from a group that includes computer giant Microsoft Corp.

Japanese pharma to buy Boston Biomedical for up to $2.6B (update)
Boston Business Journal by Julie M. Donnelly, Reporter
Date: Thursday, March 1, 2012, 11:00am EST
Japanese drug maker Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co. has agreed to buy Boston Biomedical Inc., a privately held biotechnology company, for $200 million in upfront payments and a potential for an additional $540 million in potential development milestone payments, and up to $1.89 billion in potential sales milestones.
Norwood, Mass.-based Boston Biomedical will continue as a subsidiary of the company, the Japanese pharma said ... corrected release, Thursday morning news release by Boston Biomedical and Dainippon Sumitomo. “Acquisition of (Boston Biomedical) is not only an acquisition of an innovative pipeline in the oncology area, it also represents obtaining an excellent drug discovery (and) development platform,” Dainippon Sumitomo CEO Masayo Tada said in a statement. “We intend to establish our R&D base in the U.S. to expand our presence in cancer treatment globally.”
Dainippon and Boston Biomedical entered a licensing agreement last April that included a $15 million upfront payment and potential milestones and royalties up to a total of $100 million.
The acquisition deal is expected to close in April.
Dainippon is the owner of Marlborough, Mass.-based Sunovion, the maker of drugs including sleep aid Lunesta.

And - So it Goes -- Buying and Selling -- some local companies grow by acquisition and some grow by being acquired by bigger companies with deeper pockets -- these deals are not the traditional two super markets merging or a roll-up of some small manufacture ring companies -- what's being bought and sold is the currency of the Knowledge Economy - and both ways -- we as the Hub of the KE are the Winners

SUFFOLK UNIVERSITY LOOKING INTO NEW ATHLETIC FACILITIES
April 4, 2012 · by Alex Hall · in Sports

Given its location on Beacon Hill, Suffolk University doesn’t have the luxury of building large complexes for its athletics department to utilize. However, there have been talks between the institution and New Balance in a partnership that would give Suffolk a brand new sporting complex and offices for athletics.

“New Balance is currently building a new complex in Brighton that they want the Boston Bruins to use for practice,” said Suffolk Athletic Director James Nelson. “We’ve been in talks with [them] about Suffolk joining.”

At the moment, all but the volleyball and basketball teams have to play their games off-campus, and while Brighton isn’t exactly Beacon Hill, almost all the teams would be able to play at one location. While Nelson is appreciative of the facilities like Suffolk’s Ridgeway Gym and Boston University’s hockey rink that certain teams currently use, both he and President James McCarthy believe it’s time for a change.

“BU and others have been generous to us, allowing us to be their guests,” Nelson said. “While I’m very thankful for the Ridgeway building, we’ve simply outgrown it.”

Both McCarthy and Nelson recently met to discuss the possibility of partnering with New Balance, and finding new athletic facilities in general. Nelson said the talk with McCarthy went well.

“He seemed enthusiastic,” said Nelson. “We want to explore the idea of a facility with larger seating capacity and expand other resources. We’re looking for larger fitness centers, more storage spaces, shower facilities and offices for coaches. It’s the process of finding a space nearby with a price that isn’t going to break the bank.”

It appears that a partnership with New Balance to use their facility currently under construction is the frontrunner, with many perks to offer Suffolk.

“They approached us looking for something mutually beneficial. The facility will have an indoor soccer and lacrosse fields, a hockey rink and an indoor track for our student athletes to us,” said Nelson.

While both soccer teams would certainly utilize the indoor field, the fact New Balance would have a lacrosse field raises the question of whether athletics would look into creating a team for Suffolk.

“Well, it’s something we’re looking into,” Nelson said about possibly brining lacrosse to Suffolk. “We’re currently in talks with a political figure in a nearby town about a lacrosse field. We’d need to enhance other resources though, hiring more staff and obviously coaches.”

The idea of Suffolk having its own facility to essentially call a is an intriguing one, but Nelson wanted to make it clear that the move is not being made due to poor conditions at the current fields, rinks and gyms that Suffolk uses right now.

“Dillboy Stadium where the soccer teams play, for example, is used by the Boston Breakers and Suffolk is the only college allowed to use the field.”

The Ridgeway gym was also redone with new banners and the new university logo painted into the court just last year.

Both McCarthy and Nelson will continue to look into the possibility of partnering with New Balance and their new facility, with the athletic director stating, “Talks with [the company] will continue. Right now they’re working on permitting and that sort of thing,” said Nelson.

Re: New Brighton Landing | New Balance Complex

Thanks so much for pulling all of these!

The scope/scale of this project is just incredible. Only thing that caught my eye was the large amount of above-ground parking on the ground and mezzanine floor. The parking should all be underground and let the public get to experience the parks (at the ground level) freely instead of privatizing them completely by raising them up. This is just like the issue with the Cambridge Center garage roof garden.

Re: New Brighton Landing | New Balance Complex

But by putting those parks up on a podium we get both parks (lots and lots of them) AND street-level retail, which in theory will make for a more active streetscape. The setup is a total bastard child of today's planning versus yesterday's, but short of advocating for Fort Point-style shoulder-to-shoulder buildings (which won't happen here in a million years) I'm having a hard time thinking of a better layout.

Street-level retail (featuring an urban streetwall) and parks can coexist. The park can be behind the retail. NYC recently did this with their Stuyvesant Town housing project from the 60s (that looked a lot like the Alice Taylor Apartments haphazardly thrown onto a green pasture). They filled in the spaces between the off-grid buildings and created a vibrant urban streetwall with retail and let park space exist behind it.

I like as a whole, but I'm sceptical about open green space right next to a highway.

Re: New Brighton Landing | New Balance Complex

My idea for a street grid in the area:

BrightonLanding.png

Murdock and Dustin Streets are pushed through, requiring the demolition of the self storage building (no loss there) and one house on the current Hitchborn Street.

Life street is discontinued in favor of an extended Etna Street (same path essentially).

Braintree Street is extended to intersect with an extended Guest Street to form a true square with the newly extended Murdock and Dustin Streets. Both of the intersections have pocket parks as features.

Ignore the north side of the site, it is based off my whimsical dreaming of the pike being put below grade. This would allow Lincoln Street to be made into a boulevard extension of Notantum Road, and open up development rights above the tracks and pike.

What I like about my plan is it is more overreaching and connects more parts of the area than the constraints of the New Balance project. An All/Bright 100 Acres Plan if you will. This new dense grid would also demand the buildings to come right up to the sidewalk. They could still put a few parks in there as well, they should just have better defined boarders.

There's a lot of other stuff going on here too that's part of my massive sketchup overlay plan of most of Allston. If anyone's interested I can send them the file.

Re: New Brighton Landing | New Balance Complex

Several comments based on a quick glance at the PNF.

380,000 square feet of the project will be below grade. That's about the equivalent of nine acres.

The sports complex will include a NHL regulation hockey rink, plus an indoor track. Directly across the Pike, the Boston Skating Club will be building an ice rink complex, with three rinks. IIRC, one of these will be devoted exclusively to ice hockey.

IMO, the NHL-size rink will become a practice facility for the Bruins. Note also that the New Balance complex will have a sports medicine area.

Rather surprised there's no basketball court(s).

Re: New Brighton Landing | New Balance Complex

Stellarfun, there is one seemingly token basketball court placed in the back of the oddly shaped lobby space on the first floor.
