They aren't sold out, they've all been canceled between Boston and New Haven.

It's more than a rumor about him attending UMass. About an hour ago Channel 7 had an interview with a classmate of his from the college and they have also evacuated the dorm that he was a resident of.

Nothing is being forced to shutdown by the state here, except the MBTA. And schools are likely ordered, wisely, by the local municipalities. Colleges, hospitals, offices, etc were shut down by the decisions of managers, administrators, owners, and other people in authority of private institutions.

^ Urb, this is actually April Vacation, so no K-12 schools are in session.

This entire situation is completely bizarre.
How can they shutdown the city for entire day and not find this suspect.
Now they are saying they need to keep the city on lockdown into the weekend.

People get killed in the Detriot everyday do they shut down that city?

A lot of private schools were in session this week. Typically boarding schools and many independent day schools will have a two-week spring break in March.
