Cambridge Crossing (NorthPoint) | East Cambridge/Charlestown | Cambridge/Boston

2) A stupid but well-intentioned question: are the 4 barges in the water (two with red cranes) related to the Cambridge Crossing construction projects? I don't know if they're related to a long-term industry that's always been there, or if they are newer. Thanks.

No, they are related to the re-build of the MBTA green line viaduct, seen directly to the left of the barges.

My understanding matches @bigpicture7 : all the barges you see are working on the 1910 vintage Lechmere viaduct for the Green Line (Bringing it into a state of good repair and actually upgrading it to accommodate heavy, longer, faster, light rail vehicles.)

Looks like not only is Tatte moving in but Lamplighter is opening a brewery here (goodbye, liver). I can’t wait for CX to open up.

That the old viaduct being upgraded for the Green line extension

After the spectacular success of two COVID-19 vaccines that rely on messenger RNA technology, the French drug giant Sanofi said Tuesday it will invest more than $475 million a year to develop vaccines that use the same approach against other infectious diseases, and much of the work will be done in Cambridge.

Sanofi plans to create a vaccines mRNA Center of Excellence that will employ 400 people in Cambridge and Lyon, France.

The new center will ultimately be located in Sanofi’s massive research complex that is under construction in Cambridge Crossing at the intersection of Cambridge, Boston, and Somerville.

That drone video was awesome! I was trying to count how many more buildings are still yet to start in the Crossing- maybe 4 or 5 more? I drive by this pretty much every day on 93 but never get to see in between and get that aerial perspective so it's nice to see how well this is turning out!

@gac108 - The remaining lots (with structures planned) are: A, B, C, D, LM, I2, Q2 R, V1. Sites I3 and V2 will likely be temporary event areas (I3) or extended plot (V2's farmers' market).

The lots under construction are: EF, G, H, U, I, and Q1 (punchcard stage).

Finally, the lots delivered are: S, T, JK, W, and N.

...I drive by this pretty much every day on 93 but never get to see in between.....

IMO this hits the nail on the head for my biggest problem with this area. It creates a giant wall along the Leverett Connector which lacks both grace and permeability. It's easily the worst proportioned neighborhood of an already poorly proportioned city. There is nothing inviting to draw one in. It's a giant barrier, plain and simple.

Isn't that likely a feature not a bug. We often talk about building "walls of buildings" along highways as an urban design approach to buffer the rest of the area from the highway. I am sure the rest of Cambridge Crossing benefits from the building wall buffering highway noise.
