Emerson College's Paramount Center

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Check out the Emerson campus Elkus Manfredi is building in LA...christ what I would give for them to even contemplate such inventive architecture here.

goes to show that boston's institutions and architects aren't always responsible for half the dreg that gets built in this city.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

That looks interesting in its LA setting, but it's not what I'd want to see on the Paramount site.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Obvs not, Ron, but in the Seaport or Kendall?

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Seaport or Kendall would be perfect !

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

I'd say anywhere but DTX, Beacon Hill, and the North End/Shawmut Peninsula would be perfect.

reminds me of the building that was proposed for the site across the street from the W. narrow. layered. wish we could have both buildings built on vacant parcels in that area.

They put an Apple Store in DTX too? ;)

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Since when has Jean Nouvel worked at Elkus?

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

A soon to be exciting vista of entertainment and learning, marred by Tremont on the Common...Like a port-o-john in an Ansel Adams photo...

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Oh come on. It at least adds another layer of density and complexity to the scene. When (if) Hayward Place is ever developed, it will be possible to take a photo from that perspective that encompasses a very deep range of architecture in a very small area...and without a whiff of sky. Which is as it should be, in this part of the city.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Absolutely cz.

All the griping about how Boston doesn't get anything unusual, but this is. I wasn't sure this design was going to work, based on the renderings. (And it's an Elkus. *shuddering*) However, I'm amused. It's subtle enough, too, for Boston sensibilities. ;)

It's like the front of the newer part slid off into ... onto the ... ummmm, what's under there? The old Arcade Building? I forgot what it looks like. Or as if somebody dropped a box, it landed in that position, and they left it there.

It works for me, as it is now. We'll see what happens when the plastic comes off. Kinda humorous.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Toby, thanks for that great pic (the most recent). It's been a while since I paid any attention to this project. I was dubious when this started 3 years ago, but it's turning out better than expected. I really enjoy the slightly whimsical transition for the eye from the Opera House & Paramount back to the hulking ToC.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Yeah another blank wall in the front! But when you look to the right, they been doing the blank wall thing for years!

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

Thanks BBF! The picture is a little askew because I was dodging taxicabs.

Statler gave me a laugh with the Apple Store thing. When they take the wrapper off the Arcade romanesque facade, the glass triangular part above is going to look like it slid off the front of the glass penthouse, exposing the blank wall!

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

That last pic really shows the failing of modernism. Good job.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

I believe that blank wall will be covered by a decorative mural of some kind, showing the area's theatrical history.

Re: BRA approves Emerson College's Paramount Center

^^ Interesting thought, Ron. Has Emerson posted something about this? One could infer from one of the earlier renderings (posted somewhere above) that the blank wall would function as a scrim for projected images. Don't know how much this helps during the day...
