Four Seasons Tower @ CSC | 1 Dalton Street | Back Bay

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

If you can't access a Globe link, copy and paste it into Google, click from there, and voila.

That doesn't work for the Globe after you've exceeded your monthly limit of ~5 or 10 articles.

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

“It’s hard to imagine another spot where you could have fairly large-scale development with so few negative impacts,” said Thrush, who is also director of Northeastern University’s School of Architecture. “This is a rare case where more development is clearly in the public interest.”

I think this quote is pretty damning of architects.

To be honest, that particular area isn't very pleasant to be around, even in the nice weather. The CSC itself isn't very pedestrian friendly. These are just two plots of land they can plop towers on that will only cast shadows on the hotel room windows in the ugly Hilton and Sheraton.

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

I think he's referring to this quote: “This is a rare case where more development is clearly in the public interest,” which basically frames the majority of "more development" in a negative light as "not in the public interest."

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

Wait, ArchRecord calls that SLEEK?! I love AR and they are an extremely credible publication, but damn that is so incorrect.

I almost wrote a very similar response when I read that. If proposed here, I'd read the words "Menino Stump" so many times.... very fitting or not.

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

Like
South Station Tower
Copley Tower Residences
Winthrop Square

Will never be built. All talk.

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

Why is this the mantra? Because its somewhat tall?

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

yup .... at best it will be cut to 390' if it gets built .... and it will take 5-10 years.

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

Why would it be cut down or delayed? Isn't it already approved for its current proposed height?

I'll disagree also about the CSC not being pedestrian friendly. In any good weather, the reflecting pool and plaza always attract people. This is one of the very few Modernist urban redevelopments that actually works well.

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

As a collection of buildings, the CSC is stunning, both in it's completeness of vision and quality of execution.

I can only hope that whatever is added to it, will honor I.M. Pei's vision.

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

........... And South Station Tower and Copley Residences were approved at 621 feet and 647 feet in 2006 and 2011 and ......... do you see towers there? poof!

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

^^ The quick 'n dirty answer is "perhaps."

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

Wrong.

Just copy the writer's name and the title of the article into the Google search window and hit enter.

There will be a listing of several links for that same story - - the first one or two may run up against the Globe wall, the third or fourth + in the Google list will get you the full article.

I've been doing it that way for almost a year now. Whenever there is a full article I want to access it, I access it. There is no limit that way.

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

Maybe you should give the globe some $$$

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

The Globe's betting on people not being patient enough to do this for every story they come across outside an actual search or social media. The charge is effectively for the convenience of one-click access, which I'm happy to get around by being patient and doing a little extra work.

Plus plenty of people buy into paywalls, enough that the NYTCo is making a huge profit off them now. And the Globe is aiming for its stories to be widely-read (since it still depends on advertising as well) which is why it developed this "loophole" for search engines anyway.

What czsz said.

They get my clicks for their advertising only on the articles I deem fit to click. That's enough.

They employ Dan Shaughnessy, so they aren't all that altruistic either.

Are the situations different? As I understand the hcurch's longterm financial strategy is based on building. If they don't move ahead then they threaten the entire campus. Also seems to me that non-profits have a better track record in this area. They don't have the resources to propose pipe dreams so something usually results.

Not a relevant comparison. Those are both air rights projects.
And the cost basis for the CSC is minimal since they've owned it so long.

Exactly, this has basically passed the majority of the regulatory hurdles already

Re: Christian Science Church Center Renovation/ New Towers

So construction begins this year?
