Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

I really hate that those windows add nothing to the design.

Agree. The windows nearly destroy it. It was looking like something that's been here for a while, now it's kind of... meh. I still like it alot though.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

LOTS OF PICS, LOTS OF INFO.

The crown is going up. I think it actually really helps this building. It breaks up the monotony. I really hope there is some sort of lighting at night.

So, I lucked out and saw that they were installing some of the crown while I was there! Here's the process.

Orienting the slab...

Away we go!

Fitting it in:

That's not all! A man down the road noticed me taking pictures and asked if I was interested in the process. Turns out he is one of the CRANE OPERATORS on the site. I asked him a few questions, and this is what I found out.

Is the cladding precast or real limestone?
It is precast. Good-looking precast, but precast just the same.

The crown slabs (the one they were putting up in particular) apparently weigh about 38,000 pounds.

When will the project be complete?
Soon. The roof crane is coming down tomorrow (!) and the crane on the side should be down sometime in November.

So yeah. THEN I saw Julia Stiles walk by. It's been quite the day.
Hope this was informative for you guys!

My only takeaway from your whole post was that you saw Julia Stiles walk by. What a great day indeed! :)

Ive thought this all along, even though I found the link to the Bybee stone company. I'm not sure what their involvement was. Is it possible that the concrete was created from a special/custom mix of material that give it the more refined finish?

Suffolk construction now lists the project on their site and identifies it as precast cladding.

The operator mentioned that the cladding came from a quarry in Italy, and was shipped to Quincy, where it was then brought to the site on large flatbed. I was confused by this- does one quarry for precast? Like for the stone needed in the concrete?

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

I haven't seen this building up-close. But those pictures that Boston posted up-above gives that building no justice.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

Cornice is kind of silly but I at least appreciate the effort.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

Cladding might be precast limestone panels. The only difference between that and typical concrete is the composition of the aggregate.

I thought about responding to your post but never actually did...derp.

Anyway, I agree with everything you said--it's kind of meh and there are certain things about it that bug me, but at the end of the day I do still like it. So far I give it a B-minus.

Re: Liberty Mutual plans major Boston expansion

If I recall the redesign of the original Liberty Mutual building replaced the older windows with plain sheets of glazing. so I'm not surprised the new building's windows are similar. And I like the cornice....it finishes off a rather simple building and relates it a bit more to the nearby old John Handcock.
