Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

They also list Seattle, which only has 7 more departures than logan. Could they be trying to use it as an international jumping off point. They have air France and Ailitalia in Skyteam and they also have Korean Air and 2 big China ones. If one or both the the Asian carriers come in, or Delta launches its own, they could build it up with some feeder flights.

I wonder if MassPort, with their insistence that all overseas arrival flights land at Terminal E, didn't hinder American and Delta from expanding their overseas schedules. Having customs/INS in, say Terminal A for Delta, would make changing planes for overseas flights almost seamless, same with American and Terminal B. At JFK, Delta and American have their own dedicated customs/INS.

That's up to Customs and Border Patrol. They were more against it.

Seattle is set up to be a transpac hub which has been made very clear by Delta. However, they also have Alaska providing a LOT of feed even though they are competing as well. JetBlue will not be feeding Delta that's for sure and come to think about it is Richmond, Cincinatti, Colombus and Indianapolis really going to create a lot of connections for Delta.

It is pretty common practice to have a separate International Terminal. It does not seem to hinder O'Hare's international business in Chicago.

It takes a major terminal redesign (segregated secure pathways to Passport Control and Customs Halls) to accommodate international arrivals.

Pretty sure FIS in Terminal A was considered during its development in the early 2000s however Massport couldn't get any assurance from DL that they would operate flights and actually use the facility. Remember the terminal opened in 2005 and DL didn't operate international flights until 2009 (AMS following merger with NWA). LHR and CDG came online in 2011, although CDG was just the seasonal addition of DL metal complementing the AF JBV flights.

As we've pointed out many times in other contexts, Terminal A was built without the ability to handle 767s at a single gate. That essentially kills it for FIS purposes. FIS was considered there during design, was nearly built at Terminal B where the new extension for United is (the project was approved 9/10/01).

Speaking of terminal A - is it true that the former Regional jet gates 9-12 are being converted into 2-3 mainline gates?

Also - JetBlue is cutting Houston Hobby service to only 1x daily starting in October. Chalk that up as a win for Southwest and United.

Southwest and United should be very happy- Jetblue launched quite the fare war to Houston, dropping fares to $108 RT to HOU at one point. There are still sub $150 RT fares available in the Fall.

In other news, Spirit Airlines will be launching West Palm Beach from BOS on Nov 21, ahead of schedule.

According to the presentation Arlington linked to, the regional gate area will be replaced by short term international gate(s).

Just received an email from JAL that they are adjusting their BOS schedule for JL 7/8 to offer more connections throughout Asia.

ANNOUNCING IMPROVED SCHEDULES Now More Connections to/from More Cities in Asia

Japan Airlines has announced that it will be adjusting flight schedules on several international routes to improve same-day connections for customer convenience when traveling to and from Asia, and to strengthen the airline's overall network. Schedule adjustments include the following highlights:

TOKYO – BOSTON ROUTE

JAL's daily service from Tokyo (Narita) to Boston, JL008, will be adjusted to a late evening
departure from Narita, doubling the number of same-day connections from Asia to Boston**.

Flight No.

JL007 BOS–NRT 11:50 15:35+1 787-8 Oct 26, 2014
JL008 NRT–BOS 11:30 to18:20 10:15 to16:50 787-8 Oct 26, 2014

* Arrvl/Dptr times of JL007/008 will be 1 hour later between 10/26/14 and 11/01/14, and on/after 3/8/15. Arrival time of JL008 will be 15 minutes later and dptr time of JL007 will be 10 minutes later on/after 01/01/15.

Just received an email from JAL that they are adjusting their BOS schedule for JL 7/8 to offer more connections throughout Asia.
I think we half-discussed this upthread, noting that JAL will now have a plane sitting at BOS for ~20 hours (from its afternoon arrival until its noontime departure the next day).

Is having an aircraft sit like that a "sign of" something? Believing that all the connecting $ are worth leaving a beautiful plane so pitifully idle? Essentially, every passenger on every NRT-BOS r/t is paying for 3 planes: the two they fly on and the one that sat there in BOS doing nothing just to get them a convenient time.

Is it desperation? Or that "Boston is worth it?"

When domestic "spokes" get their RON (remain over night) it is a sign that the "day" from the hub at been maxed and that the "fringes of the day" and the local market departing on day trips from the spoke were the last frontier to be tapped. kinda?

Well, judging from the passenger data from Massport, loads should be pretty good on JAL.

In June 2014, there were 74 transpac flights (60 Tokyo + 14 Beijing) and 13,534 passengers. Hainan 787s carry 213 people and JAL carries 186. So if all flights in June were completely full, that would mean 186 * 60 + 213 * 14 = 14,142 seats.

In reality, 13534 seats were filled. So the average load across Hainan and JAL is 95.7%! Even if Hainan had close to 100% loads, JAL still would have had ~90% loads, which is very good!

While those are undoubtedly good numbers, isn't summer the peak season between Boston and Asia? Wouldn't a better judge be how these are doing in off-peak?

Loads alone are a useless measure of profitability.

Loads alone are not a good measure, but they are a factor, expecially for long-haul routes like these.

In addition, JAL is charging very high fares on the BOS-NRT route. Economy fares are around $2000 RT and Business class at $6000. Other carriers are charging ~$700 less for economy fares with a connection in ORD/JFK/DTW/YYZ. This means that JAL knows that they can get the premium/business travelers who can pay for the nonstop.

I wonder how much, if any, cargo the flights to Tokyo and Beijing are carrying.

Also, the CBS Evening News did a segment last month about the explosion of Chinese tourists to New England, specifically Maine and they mentioned the new non-stop to Beijing from Boston and how that's a tool being used to get Chinese tourists to visit Maine.

not sure if it is realistic but JAL may be considering 2 flights a day once they have another aircraft so that one does not sit in Boston for so long.

For January 2014

BOS-NRT 592,515 lbs freight
NRT-BOS 863,456 lbs freight

I checked some other months and the numbers are fairly similar. The route imports more into BOS than exports.

The route is too thin and NRT is not the best hub (in terms of destinations offered).

Cathay Pacific is hinting at a new destination in the USA. On their instagram they have two pictures, one prominently featuring a pair of red socks. This lines up with the rumors earlier this year that Boston will be one of their next destinations.
