Logan Airport Flights and Airlines Discussion

Just wanted to show y'all this amazing tail picture on the Massport homepage right now, a great blend of Europe and Asia!

Lots to discuss

1)TAP Portugal has loaded Lisbon-Boston according to the weekly schedule update on airliners. Looks to start early June and will be daily through September then drops off a bit then.

I can't find a schedule yet in freely available databases, TAP's website etc. It will be interesting to see where the flight fits timewise in crowded Terminal E.

2) Went to Boston Travel Show

Airlines that had booths were: JetBlue, Air Canada, El Al, Turkish Airlines, SATA now running with Azores Airlines branding, AeroMexico, and Norwegian

JetBlue had new seats and new In flight entertainment screen on display. No mint though

Norwegian got a lot of extra promotion since both Guadeloupe and Martinique had booths as well.

As expected, there was lots of Caribbean, North America and Europe tourism. However, there was a huge quadrant of booths promoting Indonesia. Too bad they didn't partner up with Emirates, Cathay Pacific or Qatar Airways to show the deals one can get from flying there. Also - nothing China-specific which was surprising to me.

Awesome picture - you get faraway view from that on the Blue Line between Wood Island and Airport. On the way home yesterday from Travel Show saw the exact same setup around 2:45 ish along with a British Airways tail
 
I really wish JetBlue would pull it's head out of its ass and start doing A321 flights on the tech shuttle between BOS and SFO. The older A320 don't have power outlets on normal seats and it sucks because my laptop sucks power.
 
JetBlue will be starting Mint service on BOS-SFO starting next month. BOS-LAX will start in the Fall.

Hooray. Never flown Mint, but just getting the A321's with the every seat AC adapter will be huge for us coach-dwellers.
 
I'm actually a bit surprised that TAP is starting out at daily, would have expected them to start off at 5x and then increase, especially since they are launching within 3.5 months. They must be very bullish about the route.

Link fixed. While we aren't seeing the competitive surge domestically, despite falling (fallen) fuel prices (suggesting collusion, not just "discipline"), it is good to see that international competition is alive and well.

They may be bullish for a few reasons. One, it's a pretty short flight relatively speaking. Two, there is not a lot of service from the US to Portugal. Only a season flight by American from Philadelphia and a year round flight by United from Newark - in addition to existing TAP service to Newark and Miami. Three, there's a sizable Portuguese population in Massachusetts and the Providence area they can tap into. My friend makes regular trips home at least once a year and is not the biggest fan of SATA's service. So some may view TAP as a nice upgrade over SATA in terms of service.


Is this going to depart out of Terminal C?

Also JetBlue tie-up is going to happen (maybe just interline for now). USA Today article says Terminal C but they would have 2 hrs 45 minutes between unloading, taxi over to C and departure.

Massport released the numbers for January 2016.

Total Passengers - 2,342,969 (up 11.1% over Jan 2015)
Total International Passengers - 419,899 (up 21.1% over Jan 2015)
Total Domestic Passengers - 1,916562 (up 9.1% over Jan 2015)

Middle East - 50,437 (up 55.3% vs Jan 2015) Average load - 235 passengers
Europe - 177,282 (up 12.7% vs Jan 2015) Average load - 182 passengers
Central America - 14,481 (up 122.9% vs Jan 2015) Average load - 111 passengers
Asia - 30,388 (up 73.1% vs Jan 2015) Average load - 191 passengers
 
Wow, solid growth. The international is too be expected with just the number of new flights, but over 9% for domestic seems very impressive! Is there any parceling of how much the growth was that continued on international versus just O&D or domestic transfers.
 
Is there any indication of how much traffic last January was depressed due to weather and the snow storms last year vs. how much was true organic growth?

Last year's first blizzard was not until Jan 26-28, so didn't really lose that much to make the year over year comparison.

Not bad!

Unrelated TAP Portugal is releasing their LIS-BOS schedule this week and opening bookings.

Concerning the numbers (assuming Emirates ran double 77W's, Turkish ran A333, and El Al ran 767) Middle East had a 75% Load Factor. East Asia flights had an assumed 88.4% Load Factor.


Really good deals on TAP right now Boston-Europe for 799 which includes 1 checked bag and 50% frequent flier miles.

How so? Just 3 days worth of cancellations, being 10% of a 31 day month (or six days of halved traffic) could easily have had an effect on the order of 10% of BOS of domestic traffic as locals decide it isn't worth getting to the Airport, meetings get cancelled or switched to teleconference, and out of towners got scared off.

Recall that NYC was supposed to get that first storm (but effectively didn't), which would still have been a big reason for them not to come here or us not to go there on the 24th-26th, or not start a trip Jan 30-31 with another blizzard forecast for Groundhog Day.

Last years Blizzards' suppression of traffic might not account for all of the 9% monthly YOY increase, but it could easily be most of it.

Also - Norwegian is returning the Guadeloupe/Martinique flights next winter starting the second week of November.
 
Not flight related, but Logan just shared this good news on Facebook:

During the past 14 years, harmful vehicle emissions from cars and buses at Logan Airport are down a combined average of 83%. More Logan International Airport travelers use MBTA public transportation, buses, vans and other High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) modes than anywhere else in the country.

LOGAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT - TERMINAL E RENOVATION AND ENHANCEMENTS
This project includes approximately 110,000 square feet of new construction and 150,000 square feet of renovation to accommodate Airbus A380 Group VI aircraft—the world’s largest passenger jet.
The scope of work includes the reconfiguration and modification of existing gates to allow for the installation of new two-level aircraft boarding jet bridges as well as the modification and renovation of the existing aircraft taxi lanes and apron.
The renovation and enhancements will also create an overall improved passenger experience throughout the international terminal.
This is Suffolk’s fourth major project with Massport at Logan International Airport in recent years.
Built by Suffolk Construction's airport contractors in Boston, MA.
