It's unfortunate. That black strip is unforgivable. The rest of the building is pretty good though. I don't understand how they looked at the rendering and thought "yea, let's not only block off prime views of the park, but let's just leave it black too".

I might well be a minority of one, but I actually like the black strip. It's like a giant monolith pointing to Titan.

On the plus side, it's the side of the building facing a back alley. It's conceivable that something tall could be built back there in the medium-to-longterm future. So, the blank strip isn't exactly a future party wall, but it's pretty close. In the short term though, yeah, looks pretty bad.

Yes, it's facing a back alley... which abuts Parker House for its entire length. Which, like many other core Boston hotels, is doing great business these days (hence the handful of new hotels in development).

You're not seriously suggesting that the Parker House would be demolished in the "medium-to-longterm" future, are you?! Surely it's a historically protected landmark, for starters, current profitability aside.

That glass is very reflective, I guess I was expecting a more transparent glass on the podium portion of the tower

Aww, I remember the days when I was able to just go out during my break and peer over the side of the garage to the building below. Now I'm at a new job where I have a view of the less impressive but no less exciting One Canal St. How many floors before they hit the standard floor plate and this thing starts to really shoot up?

Yeah, I expressed concern about this before, but hopefully it'll look more transparent when there are well-lit storefronts behind the glass.

It's occurring to me how much this'll look like a more approachable, less bollard- and tree-protected version of the John Hancock.

2 points here. First, as Datadyne said, they're already working on the 3rd residential floor and it IS shooting up. However, the lower residential floors are literally half the height of some of the lower floors. So even though it's picking up speed, it's rising less at a time. It looks like the ceiling heights will increase again for the upper half of the tower, so it should appear to be faster at that point.

My estimate is that by the weekend of the 13th/14th, they will be working on the 10th floor and it will finally be pushing past the old building. It's very close now. I think from certain angles it's almost visible from the river even. Once it passes the old building we will begin having vantage points for this from all over the city.

Most likely it will be early 2015 to see it from Mem Dr. in Cambridge

You can now see the Crane but the top of Beacon Hill blocks the view of the Burnham and other of the 8 to 10 story buildings along upper Washington St.

As you walk along the river, the views change. Beacon Hill doesn't always block this location.

DHZ to be sure -- I was mostly thinking The View as you stand and contemplate Pru and Hancock directly across from you on the Mem Dr. version of the Esplanade

Well, the builders were kind enough to use that bright orange metal stuff to help us pick it out the scintillating downtown skyline.

Here's a few pics from today shot with a GoPro. Noticed it's going up a level, at least the yellow barricade is on some sections. I also noticed walking past hours later in the dark that the Burnham building had some nice accent lighting shining up on the green pole structures, not sure what you call them.

Congrats. I'm pretty sure you're the first to take GoPro pix on here! Killer photos. You should submit that first one to Millennium.

Nice pics mcus, love that first one!

Thanks guys. Yea, the wide on the GoPro is pretty sweet. Definitely not appropriate for most architecture photography but it's fun for sure!
