One Canal (formerly Greenway Center) | Bullfinch Triangle | West End

Re: One Canal (formerly Greenway Center, Bullfinch Triangle)

As others have said, this development really does bring a different feel to the area. I haven't been down there recently myself, but it's very obvious, even from photographs.

Agreed. Feels "just right" for the zone, despite being far from completed: like it fits.

...as opposed to Nashua ST's shoehorning...

Re: One Canal (formerly Greenway Center, Bullfinch Triangle)

Why is it that one of things people on here pine for all the time is slim, tall, infill projects, but when something tall gets crammed into a small site, it's derided as awful 'shoe horning', and something to be avoided?

Re: One Canal (formerly Greenway Center, Bullfinch Triangle)

This whole area has so much potential. If it ends up even half as great as I am imagining it will be a wonderful neighborhood.

Couldn't agree more. With the garage redev, North Station (and Nashua Street) projects, Lovejoy, Merano, not to mention a few more parking lots that could be developed in Bulfinch Triangle, this could become one of the biggest destination spots in the city. Already has great transit access and the development seems to be coming!

Re: One Canal (formerly Greenway Center, Bullfinch Triangle)

I love that block of buildings in the foreground so much. Imagine if the whole neighborhood was made up of blocks like that?

Oh wait, it was.

Yep. Aaaaand those are the buildings in the area most likely to get torn down to make room for another monotonous precast landscraper in the coming years (assuming they're not landmarked) :(

Re: One Canal (formerly Greenway Center, Bullfinch Triangle)

I wouldn't worry Itchy...the neighborhood is historic and I can't believe anything of significance will be torn down. Instead there will more likely be infill buildings here and there...

Re: One Canal (formerly Greenway Center, Bullfinch Triangle)

I was wondering why certain buildings in that area were spared the wrecking ball back in the day.

Re: One Canal (formerly Greenway Center, Bullfinch Triangle)

No development, no wrecking ball. The area was not included in the massive clearing of Scollay Sq or the West End. I believe it was because it was filled with going concerns re: light industry, etc. It was a part of the city that was still working as originally intended, and was not as affected by the rabid sports culture that now surrounds the Garden. The elevated Orange and Green lines as well as the expressway cutting through the area kind of preserved the Triangle in time, since no one was about the fool with those transit systems when urban renewal was most popular. Add to that the fact that this is filled in land, created by Bulfinch when the causeway which helped to regulate the tides and run grain mills was used (similar to Beacon Street in the Back Bay) as a primary connector on which North Station's various buildings were eventually erected (prior to the Manger and the Garden). The area, once filled, also hosted a canal (adjacent to Canal St.) which connected the Charles and harbor with the inland Haymarket area. The canal, once filled in, became the perfect place for RR tracks going to the station in Haymarket Sq. which eventually merged with North Station. So the area was caught in a kind of time warp and left alone to this day. Hopefully future infill will be sensitive to the scale of the area.
