^all that equipment lying around means the project is still proceeding in the current phase, right? I don't see any humans in those pics, but looks like its still U/C...

It looks so different from last time I was here. Looks like they've just about finished track shortening. Inside they're moving the shops around away from the platform doors. Overhead covering is at least half way gone.
 
Does anyone know if the bike parking cage is still there? Or where they relocated it to? (if they did at all)
 
From this week's construction update:
"On Friday, January 8, a 370-foot-long crane will be delivered to the Atlantic Avenue construction zone. In preparation for the crane arrival, starting the week of December 28, the construction zone will be expanded onto the existing sidewalk. The existing parking lane in front of the construction zone will be repurposed for pedestrian use.
The contractor, working days and overnights, will erect the crane between Friday, January 8, and Sunday, January 10. This work will detour traffic along Atlantic Avenue, as well as close the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk adjacent to the construction zone. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.
Once erected, this crane will be used to construct a portion of the bus terminal and parking garage overbuild. During this period, the repurposed parking lane will be utilized for pedestrian access around the construction zone. "

This site has been overdue for an erection for so long that I nearly asked my cousin to prescribe it Viagra. And now that this day is here, I couldn't be more proud! The bus station decking has really begun. Hopefully, the project remains on target to start doing heavy foundation work during the summer.
 
Don't want to get off topic, but why is there a 45-rpm record in one of the pics? Was someone listening to music?!! Hah!!

Is this the beginning of the actual tower, or is it some side project connected to SST?

This steel specifically is for the Bus Terminal Expansion, connected to SST. Simultaneous work is ongoing with the foundation for the actual tower, and the podium/arches will likely begin construction at the end of Phase 2, ending in Dec. 2022. It's going to be a while before the actual tower floors are going up, and it will be another 4+ years before the tower is complete, but this is still good progress and signs that they're staying roughly on schedule.

I'm presuming this is the end of Phase 1 and beginnings of Phase 2, per the project website.

Phase 2 consists of the following, noted to start February 2021:

  • The contractor will begin work on the expanded bus terminal and parking garage (which will be built over the tracks, platforms and outdoor concourse area).
  • The contractor will perform foundation and structure work on the mixed-used tower.
  • Night work will be necessary to complete the structure supporting the bus terminal expansion.
  • By December 2022, the newly expanded bus terminal will be opened for public use with access from Atlantic Avenue through the existing bus terminal entrance.

An update from 4 days ago:
Crane assembly work within the Atlantic Avenue construction zone, originally planned to be completed from Friday, January 22, through Sunday, January 24, is being rescheduled by one week. The assembly will now begin on Friday, January 29

The contractor, working extended days (12-14 hours/day), will assemble the crane’s boom from Friday, January 29, through Sunday, January 31. The crane is expected to be operational on Monday, February 1. The assembly of the crane’s 370’ long boom will require temporary closure of two of the three travel lanes along Atlantic Avenue, as well as temporary closure of the Atlantic Avenue sidewalk adjacent to the construction zone. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.

They're right on/close to their original schedule of having a crane erected by the end of Jan 2021, down to the final day.

4 years for the completion of a tower is not that bad. In the meantime Winthrop Square and One Congress will most likely be completed giving the city 3 new 600' plus towers.
