The Viridian (Fenway McDonald's) | 1282 Boylston Street | Fenway

Those temporary braces are shoring up the perimeter foundation wall until the permanent steel has been erected which will be the final bracing keeping the retaining wall from falling in on itself.

They have nothing to do with what the core will be made out of in the end.

Was watching that Ben Affleck movie "The Town" over the weekend and isn't this the site with the final shootout scene on Boylston Street?

Can anyone explain why they seem to be using rebar to sculpt a series of square "trays" in this slab?

I think those are the bottoms of the elevator pits.

Edit: They're not. It's a mat footing.

If those are all elevator pits then this building's going to have like 25 elevators!

This ... is a mat footing. For a really good idea of what this is about ...check out Macaulay's "Underground"

Ah thanks cca. I checked every textbook I had yesterday and just couldn't seem to find an example like this. They always just showed mat footings as a flat slab.

Seriously ... buy this book ... it answers almost every question about the built environment in a city ...from foundations, to utilities. It should be a must read in the first year of architecture school.

I just impulse bought this book, it looks amazing. I think, with amazon 1-click it took me less than two minutes to see the book, decide it was awesome and I needed it, and buy it.

If anyone with BIM experience wanted to make some money, make an updated version of this book. With the updated graphics, I'm sure it'd sell like hotcakes

Drove down boylston yesterday. With this and Boylston west and the muddy river project there is a a ton of activity. When these buildings are done and the next round starts the vibrancy and urbanity will be there in full force.
