Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital | Navy Yard | Charlestown

Crane is being used to support a pile driver. It's driving (metal?) struts into the ground. Earthmovers just seem to be pushing things around. Still have no idea what's going on there.

Menino wants to build a park right in front of Spaulding on this triangular piece of land.
Apparently he noticed it when he was in Spaulding rehabbing his leg and thought it would be a good spot for a handicap friendly park. He wants it complete before he leaves office in January so he can be at the ribbon cutting (pipe dream). The BRA/IDC has already cobbled together some money for it (I heard $1.5M). And of course Spaulding is all for it (views preserved forever). My guess is it gets named after hizzonah.

Seriously? That's a prime location for a smaller signature building not another park. There's already plenty of open space in the Navy yard. Is it now part of city planning "wisdom" that no one should be forced to walk more than 2 blocks or less to find some grass?

^ Someone was playing too much SimCity in rehab, I think.

Agreed. This also seems like a major gift to Spaulding if they're not pitching in.

It's going to include an adapted accessible playground, which will be great for Spaulding and their pediatric unit. I'm not sure of the soundness of the ground and surrounding pier jutting out into the harbor to support a building. Pretty sure Partners pulls a lot of the strings in the Navy Yard. They have a HUGE presence that's growing.

Did anyone notice they demo'd the warehouse across the 'Little Mystic' from this development? The one where you have to drive under the Tobin Toll Plaza from the Moran Terminal to get to it.

I'll go crazy if that gets developed before another Eastie Waterfront parcel, but good to see that something might be going on by the water.

Here's the most I've been able to find out about what's going on at the pier north of Spaulding:

Notice of Intent for DEP File No. 006-1299 from the Massachusetts Port Authority for the rehabilitation of existing
pier structures and steel piles at Mystic Pier 1 and Moran Terminal, 100 Terminal Street, Charlestown, Boston
Inner Harbor and Mystic River (Designated Port Area, Land Under Ocean, Fish Run).

The steel piles are being replaced/added now. Lots of ruckus.

Seems like a big gift to Spaulding. They should be co-funding and I don't think they are.
The piles aren't an issue. Any new building built on a pier (e.g., Converse HQ) will need new piles driven.

Maybe so. Partners seems to be running the show in the Navy Yard. Past the Constitution it's a hospital district.

Here are some pictures from the pier in front of Spaulding. The Hubway dock has been moved, and a gate installed. There seems to have already been some cleanup and there is a front-end loader on site.

There's some sort of building or warehouse going up on the pier opposite Spaulding. Got some pictures of it yesterday.

Is it just a new warehouse? They tore down the old one to replace piles in the pier.

Odd that the boardwalk they're installing isn't in the plans at all. The plans make it look like the eastern edge of the pier is being left unfinished.

It doesn't show it in the first pic, but I think that it shows a boardwalk wrapping the pier in the second picture.

Yeah I see it now. Odd that they excluded it in the rendering though.

Busses ... Just an educated guess but a few years ago there was a plan for a Fed funded facility to test wind turbine blades to be built on Massport land in Charlestown

This was to be a very long narrow short building on a pier to permit waterborned delivery as well as truck or rail

Almost would have seemed to fit the Rope Walk except for the height would have been insufficient for a BIG traveling crane
