Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

I did just that yesterday see the crane thread!

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

I was at the meeting tonight but I had to leave after I spoke in support of the project. BostonUrbEx, were you there? How did the rest of it go?

JohnAKeith, Dshoost88, and I were there.

I was there for the first two and most of the Copley discussion. Had to leave after the first three opposing views were expressed. I was going to speak in favor, but everyone did a pretty good job speaking in favor, I think. Everything was covered really well. The arguments against were really weak and lame. Tent City people STILL think a shadow will be cast on them! They're to the SOUTH!

Anyway, so I missed the vote. I hope it passed.

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

I mentioned this meeting to a friend that I went to BB with today (and that I obviously couldn't go) and he brought up an interesting point... They hosted this meeting directly in the middle of BB when all the architects and industry professionals (who would likely be in favor) were tied up at this convention!

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

It was unanimously APPROVED!

Seconds later, crowd response: "SHAME! SHAME!"

Well if it's fast tracked like Vertex was -- we should expect a fence to appear by Dec 1 and site prep by the first of the New Year

In any event -- I'm now expecting steel to start rising by this time 2012

This just made my night. Was this THE vote? Does this mean the building will be going up?

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

So, my understanding is that this was only a vote to bypass the big review of the project, the PIR or whatever it is? I mean, it's approved but I think there is still a long way to go, correct me if I'm wrong.

You really have to watch the hearing to understand the shit that goes on. Simon Properties was accused of being discriminatory and being segregationists. Mel King made the analogy to having to take a colored people's bus and wait in line for food in North Carolina in the 1950's. Shirley Kressel complained that all the stores at Copley were for the wealthy, including Tiffany's, Porsche, Barneys, and Jimmy Choo.

At least three people mentioned that only 1-percenters could afford to live there.

A woman who said she worked at Tent City said her students in the tech center there weren't welcomed in Copley Place even though they were "beautiful souls" or something like that.

I swear, I woulda punched someone if I worked for Simon. They were basically called the scum of the earth.

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

They are literally grasping a straws. John, I would have stood up and told them to get off their lazy ass and work instead of whining and complaining at every meeting. Seriously, do we ever wonder why most of us are unable to go to these meetings? It's because we actually have things to do, either to go to class or work, etc. These guys come here and complain and complain and they wonder why they haven't made anything of themselves.

And you know what pisses me off? I support the Occupy Wall Street movement but there is a right way of protesting and a wrong way. The movement is to protest government for bail outs to banks and loan mismanagement that sent the economy to the crapper. Neiman Marcus is NOT RESPONSIBLE for the economic failure and it's utter bullshit to even use that rhetoric in this situation. What these folks are doing is attempting to initiate a class warfare and using as a justification for anything. These are the dangerous types. These are the types that OWS need to move away from, not embrace.

Right, Shirley Kressel and Mel King haven't made anything of themselves...

Anyway, once you retire, you can spend all your free time rattling off pro development diatribes at public meetings.

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

BTW, the Folk-Song-Guy was in attendance at the meeting. LOL

I didn't see him get up to speak in opposition before I left, so I assume he did not sing in opposition.

I hoped beyond hope that he was going to sing.

But in all seriousness, I am very excited for this project. And it seems to me that they've done a lot to address the concerns about affordable housing. The plan is to build 10 units on site as affordable and develop 38 offsite, but if that development doesn't work, they will provide all 48 affordable units within the project.

Seems like a win for everyone, but I feel like short of saying they were going to give all 318 units away for free there was nothing they could do to win over the opposition.

Kent -- Sorry to disagree -- the people at that meeting were like the crowd at Haaaaaahvd and their leader the would-be Senator -- just a more intelectully robust form of the Occupyers down at Dewey

They really have nothing of substance to contribute to the debate or to soiety in greneral and should just go home and find something useful to do -- pehaps they can get into making wrought iron door knobs for Simon -- I hear that they are are valuable commodiy

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

According to the Herald the project will generate $7.2 million in annual property-tax revenues. This will pay for cost of the people living in tent city.

Notice the tent city advocates didn't ask for any of the 270 new permanent positions that will be created.

I'm not speaking about them, I'm talking about those that are complaining that Copley Place is filled of rich stores that they can't shop at or that they don't feel welcome at Copley Place because it is too upscale.

My gripe is that nobody has the right to demand Simon not to put high-end store in their property. The US does not run in a command economy and applying the OWS motto is an egregious misuse of it because OWS is not protesting wealthy stores, they are protesting wealth inequality and government waste.

Re: Copley Place plan calls for condo tower

According to the Globe construction could begin in just a couple of months:
