The unintended irony of that sign is huge. All the residents from the demolished West End would have been home if they hadn't been displaced by these Soviet towers in the park.

Charlie -- Sure some of the buildings might still be there -- but by now the original residents would all be gone -- just as most of the old timers in the North End have been replaced by yuppies

You can't maintain a place out of the context of the economy -- the West End would have fallen to the lure of the $ -- juxtaposed as it was to the courthouses, government offices and the Mass General complex.

Obviously the population would have evolved, but having a North End type neighborhood there instead of the sanitized towers in the park would have been more vibrant and real by several orders of magnitude. There is no comparison between what is there now and what would have evolved naturally.

Exactly, Charlie.

Just in terms of geography and acreage, the "attractive / money-maker" side of Boston would be expanded by a not-insignificant amount had the West End not been replaced by the BRA's CRP.

Just admiring the pedestrian refuge islands. I think Portland, Maine needs more of these.

I give up. Geez, there's like one of every style there. Beacon Hill? Summer Street?

That's actually The Sunday School Building, not the Mother Church.

^but that picture is absolutely stunning nonetheless

Yeah, IM Pei's planning was freakin genius with the way the reflecting pool reflects all the buildings in the complex. Gmack captured that quality beautifully in that photo.
