The New Retail Thread

^^ Agree on height, or perhaps an inhabited gable roof like the market buildings. Two more floors would be an improvement.

If this is a go, I hope the glass is clear, and not the dated mirror nonsense like Marketplace Center.

The DeNormandie proposal for the market looks pretty good...I wish it stepped up to something with a little more height along the Greenway, though.

What are the chances of it actually happening?

CZ -- the pluses:
1) BIG + is that DeNormandie already owns the buildings on the west? side of Blackstone St.
2) a smaller plus in Boston is that DeNormandie is all ready to build in Eastie -- which is now one of Menino's priority areas.
3) seem to have at least a partial buy-in from the Haymarket vendors

The minuses:
1) DeNormandie had no input to the only response for the new RFP for Parcel #7 --Boston Public Market
2) not sure of the status of the RFP process for Parcel #9

If I am understanding this plan correctly (and I'll admit I just scanned through it), most of the one story commercial space that faces Haymarket will be replaced. I see below grade parking where you now walk down to various cheese, meat shops, etc.

Also, I'll be sad to see Haymarket Pizza replaced. However, it looks like the bar Durty Nelly's remains. I can see the benefits of the plan overall but I hate to see one of last vestiges of the old Boston swept away with this plan. Perhaps it would be better to just build on the vacant parcel 9 and make incremental improvements to the area.

^ If the Haymarket-under-glass pans out, I wouldn't be sad to see the run-down commercial space replaced. I agree they are vestiges of old Boston, but not in a good way like the rest of the Blackstone Block. And, as you mentioned, the pub building doesn't look like it will be touched.

The Durty Nelly's (nee Pete's Pub) and Adam's building are both nice. The rest of the one story spots wouldn't be a loss (as long as the businesses can come back).

I think this should be separated from the retail thread now. There is obviously enough substance for a thread.

That notice will result in all sorts of illicit skateboarding, photography, videography, choreography, and potentially pornography being produced on it out of spite.

^ They probably know that, but can also rest assured they won't be liable for it.

God that "Asian-themed" restaurant is embarrassing.

Boston, still as fratty and provincial as ever.

Shrine, their sister restaurant/club in Foxwoods gets rave reviews. Although not really my thing, a place like this is much needed in the Seaport.

Are the new Vertex buildings slated to have similar retail/restaurant components to 1MPG? If so, then, for all there's not to like about Fan Pier, then maybe we can say that at least got something right at the street level.

Because it's run by the same people behind a club at Foxwoods? Does it not scream Saugus to you? And "Asian restaurant"? I mean, not even "Pan-Asian" or "Asian fusion"...but...Asian? What does that even mean?

Sure, maybe conventioneers from the midwest or wherever will eat this place up...but I don't see this being a big draw for the techies that are supposed to work (live?) in the neighborhood. Let's just say Empire is no Mission Chinese (located in a real techie neighborhood)...likewise, could you see this place opening in Kendall or Central Squares?

But no, it's not open, so I should shut up about it, just like we should all shut up about, say, the future Walgreens in DTX.

It's amazing how much you're able to tell about an unopened restaurant's food, service, and decor just from a throw away marketing buzzword.

Blade -- have you been to any of their restaurants?
The comments are just so over the top that I'll have to mention them the next time I'm in my club (said with the appropriate upper crust sneering accent)

Big Night Entertainment is also behind the Red Lantern in Boston's Back Bay, Tosca in Hingham, The Estate in downtown Boston, and three spots at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut

The address for this upcoming Asian restaurant on the Boston waterfront is: Empire Asian Restaurant and Lounge, One Marina Park Drive, Boston, MA, 02210. Their website will be at http://bostonempire.com/

On the other hand some of us have been to a Walgreens
