Re: Mass Art Dormitory

Erm...I woke up at 11 and there is no way I'm making it in to Boston by noon. I'm definitely down to try and attend one of the other Common Boston events as a meetup, though.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

It was pretty cool! Really enjoyed it, and it was nice to meet some aB'ers for the first time.

Shame ya' couldn't make it Kennedy! Next time!

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

So where are the pictures? :)

I tried making a set, but apparently Flickr didn't feel like making it....

I'll try putting them in their own set again.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

Loved that photostream, thanks so much, that's great stuff!

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

I love how they varied the panel thickness. It's another nice touch.

It looks like the architects really tried to take a material pretty much run into the ground by over a decade of uninspired overuse and take it someplace new. I approve.

5 depths, 5 widths, 5 colors is what the architect said about the panels.

Interestingly this was the first building ADD has ever completely designed in Revit.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

We forgot the coolest part!

Well... I think so, anyways! Being a fan of anything in a tunnel, conduit, or culvert...

The building is cantilevered on top of the first 3 floors because the first three floors curve along a sewage culvert. 6 foot diameter pipe of the chocolate stuff! The pilings come within 5 feet of the sewer.

It must be a collection culvert for the entire immediate area because it immediately goes into an adjacent pumping station, is shot 550 feet down, and out to Deer Island.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

Didn't he call it like the "chocolate river" or something?

LOL, yeah. The project manager was telling us he likes to call it the Chocolate River.

The architect said someone had the unfortunate job of inspecting the thing before and after work began... Hey, I'd *love* that job, so long as I get a suit and mask and everything... Preferably at like 2am or something, too, minimize the flow of chocolate.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

The proj. manager has definitely spoken at Wentworth many times before (he mentioned he was a WIT grad). I think he was part of one of the lectures where they tried to convert architecture students over to Construction Management. He's an awesome guy though. Well humored and opinionated, yet extremely knowledgeable.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

It was great meeting up with you guys earlier. My pictures/video came out horrendously, but I'm glad yours came out great. I thought the tour was fun, and it sounds like they're going to have more in the future too. The building seemed very efficient in its use of space, but I was completely flabbergasted by how tight they're going to cram students into those suites... and the fact that the suites were without kitchens. During the tour I made the connections to Northeastern's International Village residence hall (for obvious reasons--20+ story dorms in the same neighborhood, etc), but after living in I.V. I cannot get over how they expect to house 2 students in rooms that are essentially the same floor plan as singles over at NU.

And I've never been to Mass Art's Dining Hall, but will it be able to accommodate the surge of students moving into this res hall that will depend on those services round the clock? That's a question I forgot to ask the project management (not that they'd have an answer, though). The gym, health facilities, rec spaces, and studio spaces will be great though, and it sounds like Willy Wonka's courtyard will be a beautiful place too.

Anyway, it was nice meeting you guys. Hopefully we'll be touring Vertex/Fan Pier/Seaport Square soon. :)

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

MassArt's dining hall was recently and is currently being reno'd. The eating area was redone in 2010 and the servery is being redone this summer, right now, actually.

To me, this evokes green line type 7 cars!

Refreshingly different than any other facades we've seen go up recently.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

I like it a lot. Pretty much every day I almost walk into a lightpole admiring it on the way to class.

Sure, blame it on admiring the building ;)

I'm impressed at the unique design but a bit concerned that it sticks out a bit from the surrounding neighborhood...but it does stick out for all the right reasons. Great to be finally seeing a modern building that manages to be unique yet not over the top, blending modern with old.
