Tree House Residence Hall Tower @ MassArt | 578 Huntington Avenue | Fenway

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

I think MassArt needs this kind of public area. I'm pretty confident in saying the plaza will get used by students from all over the CoF. This Huntington Ave presence should give MassArt a true campus identity.

Will there be something besides the cafe to attract them?

It's at the nexus of the WIT and MassArt campus. If that's not enough, then the fact that it's directly outside a massive freshman dorm tower should be. The new Harvard Vanguard health services for the southern CoF schools will be in the tower too.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

I do think more cafe-like places are necessary for people to be drawn to "hang out"-- datadyne's suggestion that because it is well located, the dorm is a large one, and a health facility is there doesn't necessarily add up to a "draw" to me. Hardscaping with maybe a water feature, mini-amphitheatre, and some additional coffee/cafe places... Dunno. Hope I'm wrong and people really do treat it like a plaza.

Boston, though, needs more streets and fewer campuses. Plenty of schools get by without "true campus identity".

The water pipe thing is an unfortunate reality, but WTF is Boston doing locating these in a way that efs up the ability to build out to property lines? ugh.

Edit: pretty high praise from ArchDaily, which lumps this along with the new Gardner and ICA as part of a contemporary arch revival in Boston:

CZ -- Universities from the days of Oxford and the Sorbonne have liked the idea of campuses or quarters to sepparate themselves from the surrounding city

As more of the local schools turn into highe-rated schools with smaller more selective student bodies they convert into essentially full dorm complements on campus and as a correlary -- they turn more inward and create the next best thing to a suburban campus that their urban location will permit.

The first to do this was Haaaaaaavvd sometime in the late 18th and into the 19th Century -- they even built a wall to mimic the Medieval university model where the walls sometimes had to shield schollars from the town.

The most recent of these is Northeastern as it has made the transition from commuter school to the dormitory model

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

Yes, but obviously that doesn't have to be the case. There are countless examples, from Emerson locally to NYU and LSE. Many of these schools are elite and have full time residential populations.

And there's a way to build a campus on university property while respecting streetwalls too -- Harvard, your example, was able to do this.

Alright, more photos. It was...a little lighter out when I took the photos. Haha. But at least I got to use my SLR.

Doing something interesting with the new sidewalk on Vancouver.

I wasn't sure if I was allowed to walk around the area since the gate was open and there was a sign pointing to the entrance saying "Guest entrance", but I think that it was for the tours. I played it safe and didn't go out onto the landscaping...but kinda wish I did.

Whoever's handicapped is going to have a nice little roll to the entrance. It's a fun-looking ramp.

The ceiling inside the main lobby...WOW. Simply amazing.

Better shot of that glass counter. Totally the café.

I feel that when you stand right here, the overhang makes the building seem extremely massive.

And I just took this a few hours ago. It just looked really cool against the clouds.

And in about a week an a half, you'll all be getting some interior shots. I'm going on a tour inside the building. From what I've been able to see from peeking into the windows, it looks really, really damn cool inside. I'm excited.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

Geez, that's posh. Easily the nicest dorm lobby I've ever seen.

At the risk of exposing my total ignorance of what Mass Art actually is (beyond knowing that it's a publicly funded art school) ... is it any good? Does it need such a fancy dorm? Given that it is apparently a public institution, does it justify this sort of Class A dorm?

This does seem a bit over-the-top, no? It could just be me, but even the new Harvard, BU or NU dorms seem a bit less pimped-out.

Before Whigh posts the entire Wikipedia, I'll just say...

MassArt is one of the premiere art schools in the US and even world. It's just another gem that we have right in our city.

I don't know where you're from, but you should check out their public galleries and exhibitions if you are local. Right now they have all the thesis projects on display until the 18th.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

Are these exhibits free?

Most are displayed in the open gallery space. The movies and theatre usually are not free, but typically are excellent. You can also buy items and art made by MassArt students in the MassArt Made store in the new little addition to Kennedy (Longwood/Huntington). Veryyyyyy pricey.

I honestly do feel like it's a little bit too nice for a dorm with a bunch of reckless students, but hopefully the students will respect it because it is so nice. The Artists' Rez— while it isn't exactly the most fascinating-looking building—is actually really nice. I dormed in it last year and the rooms are like apartments. Each dorm has a bathroom, HDTV capable, kitchen sink, counters, cabinets, and a dishwasher. So it's also not too surprising that this dorm is even better.

As for MassArt itself, it's a great school. Like all schools it has a few things I wish it would work on, but it's awesome. The resources at MassArt are some of the best in Boston—anything you wanna make, you most likely will have the supplies and equipment you need in one of the shops.

Ironically, I'm transferring out of MassArt since they don't have what I want (going to Art Center in Pasadena, CA for Transportation Design), but my skills have just skyrocketed from the beginning of freshman year to where I am now (done with Sophomore year). So...yes, it is a good school. Haha.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

The material construction looks value engineered. This building won't age well.

Re: Mass Art Dormitory

The dorm is very showy, but the public areas are more important in a building like this because the rooms are SO. FREAKING. SMALL.
